Firstly a croc should only be taped when used in demonstrations, being patted or in the close vicinity of the general public, privately kept crocs should not need it, if you can't handle it don't own it. They will make noise even with the tape on, even the bigger ones, mine usually grumble!
There is not a great deal if bacteria in their mouths unless you don't filter the water properly, they have very clean mouths, especially freshies!
We only use medical tape on our small crocs and velcro on the larger ones, that way no residue and no bruising from elastic bands.
To allow people to pat an unrestrained croc (not taped) is irresponsible and I can assure you that should a bite occur the owner would be 100% liable as they have not taken all precautions necessary to reduce the risk of bite!
