Oh, and don't feel sad for me, my friend insanity has come to visit and keep me er... "comfortable".

Hmm.... just noticed the girl on the computer next to me is scouring the net for pictures of annorexic girls.... should I worry?

You should all be so lucky> :D I just got my Winter Bill, and considering I was cooling just about everthing, I thought it was a tad high. Only $2500 this quarter. I am glad i wasn't trying to heat everything.

Lucky for us Rach's employer pays the power. We have ducted aircon running 24/7 in the warmer months, plus the heating of 40 odd tanks. Wouldn't be possible if not for that.

I don't really understand why we all bitch about our electricity so much, the extra for the reptiles for most of us doesn't exceed $1000 per year, which even for a poverty stricken student budget survivor like me isn't the end of the world. For those who only own one or two snakes, it's probably about $2-$5 per week. Meh.

For someone like bigguy shelling out $2500 per quarter, well, I'm sure he gets more than 4 woma hatchlings or equivalent per year, so hey, it's not that tragic.

(feel free to ignore anything I say today btw, or any other day for that matter)

:)

we just changed elect companies......we were classed as high end home users.............it wworks out cheaper for us but our last bill was a little over $300.............and that is with 5 snakes 2 tanks of lizards, r/c air con, 5 kids to shower, 2 adults and the electric blankets............and an electric lawn mower

That has to be wrong...we run 60 odd lights ranging from 25 to 250 watts, 2 fridges, 1 freezer, 2 large fish tanks and all other household stuff and ours came at $340.00. Check your tariff ours is on 11

I guess it depends upon how long these lights etc are turned on for. Freezers don't chew up too much juice do they?

If Miss Magickal has electric hot water, I'm suprised the bill is that low.

I dont pay any electricity or gas....thats my flatmates responsibility....

Crikey, have to be really really long extension cords Greg! ours last quater $500+
lights running 24/7,elect blankeys, 2 freezers, 1 fridge, big hot watertank, too many tvs vids, dvd stereos and other stuff to count, washmachine never stops, dryer been 24/7 all winter. Pretty amazing really. Love to know much to go totally solar. damn elect heater been 24/7 too, gotta switch to gas before next winter. Bills will continue to be around that mark during summer with aircon 24/7, our place is an oven.

Bigguy and expansa............"CRIKEY !!!!!"

Do you mind if I run a few extension cords from your place to here Al?

Go for it mate, doesnt bother me none.
If my flatmate whinges, i'll just tell him to shut up!!!

I have got the leccy bill down to about $500 per quarter. Its easy. I dont heat the house. The kids have hot waterbottles and wear all their clothes at once. I have put all the flouros in series so they run off fewer ballasts(???????). Ive made the hot spots more usable in the enclosures so the herps get more efficient use of the available heat. non heat lights are on timers. I have those low wattage bulbs all through the house and shed and I have got rid of the 24/7 water pump on the outside turtle pond(that was the big saver.

I've got my energy bills down too. I just stumble around in the dark instead of turning on the lights. I don't shower. I don't cook food, raw is good enough. I don't wash my clothes, after a while, there is enough dirt etc on them that as much falls off as is accumulating, and the equilibrium point is barable. I put up a sign on the front door asking visitors to scream instead of using it. Instead of putting my garbage out to be collected each week, I let it accumulate in the backyard, this attracts local cats, birds, rats and other endothermic creatures, which can be stuffed into a sack and used as a hot water bottle on cold nights (and after a couple of nights, when the heat production from the bag stops, I can also use the contents to save on my weekly grocery bills).

Damn you are having a cracker of a post day Sdaji, that one made me look like an idiot laughing outloud in an otherwise quiet work environment which inturn makes everyone else thing im crazy.....like you i think!!!

Excellent! To experience exactly what I'm experiencing, look after all my reptiles, put up with my mum, do all my uni work, keep track of all the other $#it I have to deal with etc (most of which I wouldn't talk about or admit to ;) ) and you'll soon be feeling every bit as insane as I currently do!!! :) Meanwhile I'll be off fishing or something, knowing all my crap is being taken care of :)

Instar,

Just got quoted 2 weeks ago to run the house on solar panels, quote was 35K but you still need to run your high energy items like dryer and washing machine on mains electricity.

With this in mind the thought has crossed my mind to run a dedicated reptile room on solar.

Regards,

Sean

My elec bill is constantly arounf 1000$ per quarter.

Seems that it is something the bf is just going to have to deal with. After all, he did go out and buy my the 2 fish tanks :)

Thanks for that info Sean, 35k sounds alot but then if you add up bills over time im sure it would pay for itself. A solar herp room sounds like a great idea, does the solar setup include some sort of storage battery? Ill have to learn more about it, I did read somewhere of somebody who has done it, says its quite efficiant. :D
