The Diva's a good horse....but not the best ever, nobody beats Phar Lap
. I wrote out this big thing yesterday only to have the computer screw me over and I lost it before I posted . Can't be buggered writing it all again but just cos she won 3 cups doesn't mean she's better. I'm not trying to down play what she's done, but the whole "we'll never see it again in our lifetime" thing seems a bit odd to me. I stole this from an article I found googling phar lap just for comparison:
"Carbine carried 10st 5lbs (66kg) in a field of 39 runners in 1890 and won in record time. Phar Lap could do anything including four wins in the one week at the 1930 Flemington carnival: the Melbourne Stakes, the Melbourne Cup, the Linlithgow Stakes and the CB Fisher Plate.
Tulloch in 1956-57, as a three-year-old, was unbeatable. He would score extraordinary wins by 10 lengths. The great Bernborough won the Newmarket Handicap with 9st 12lbs (62.5kg), a Doomben 10,000 with 10st 5lbs (66kg) and the Doomben Cup with 10st 11lbs (68.5kg) in 1946. He won 15 races straight and was just marvellous."
I read on another site yesterday that Carbine won 2 races in one day on four different occasions! Then there's all the other stuff like the conditions of the turf, the weight of the steel shoes they used to use compared to the aluminium ones they have today, the food and supplements that are used these days to keep horses in peak condition...etc etc. Phar Lap had 51 starts, 37 wins and 5 placings in his 5 years before he died. Makybe Diva has had 35 starts, 14 wins and 7 placings as a 7 year old. Imagine Phar Lap had had a full racing career? There'd be nothing ever seen like it I imagine. Anyway, blah blah blah I could go on forever
