Dear Mr Laptop Thief,

You think you've stolen something that was worth some money. Yes, it could be worth $150 to you maybe... If you're very lucky. But I somehow doubt anyone would pay $150 for a nearly 4 year old Dell Latitude 830... Especially considering it has some hardware in it that predates its 4 year history considerably.

Secondly, it may have Windows 7 on it - and maybe, just maybe you'll crack the password with some hacker software, but I doubt it, but how will you crack the bios password? It makes the computer completely inoperable. In fact, you can't even wipe the hard drive - or even install a new one. And even if you couldm how much is a hard drive? And the computer is only worth about $150.

But, I will let you know, you have upset me, because on that laptop was photos from various events that I won't be able to replace, and that really sux!

It also contains about 4 or 5 weeks of work that I neglected to back up. That also really sux.

It probably contains some documents etc that are totally worthless to you, but I could do with them back.

I tell you what. You give me back my hard drive, I'll give you the bios password, and then you can put in your own hard drive and do what you want. Insurance will cover the rest.

You really are low life scum to think that you've made a quick buck...

Well Mr Thief, I am hoping you do want to make a quick buck, I hear cash converters won't hold you there, so you'll be free, but at least the serial number should give it away - it is mine, I bought it, and I'd like it back!

You are having a great time lately, hope next week is better.

Stolen, Four years old. Lucky to get 50 bucks. Brand new stolen laptops go for 120. * I haven't bought them but I have been offered*

Well, that's comforting... all my hardwork and photos for a lousy $50... That's not even a decent bottle of plonk!

I hope they return it to Banjo... It's kind of worthless to them - in fact, I'd give them $50 to return it if they want!

let me just call my lawyer

Dude go buy a Lotto ticket your lucks gotta change soon...All the best @ the Lappy being a boomerang

Probably sold for less than that. What do Junkies require nowadays?
And don't be too cocky about the BIOS , it is fairly easy to reset to factory default

Oh :( well... how??? If you remove the chip does the password disappear?

To be honest, they left some other pretty valuable stuff, so I am doubting they have their hands on a goldmine... I don't even know if they'd get a hit of anything selling that lappy...

So... My Bios for my home lappy has a password (for both system changes and startup), windows 7 is passworded, and face recognition too. There's no guest account either.

On top of that it is chained with a laptop lock to a chair - even if they bolt cut the chain, the lock part remains in the computer so it's fairly obvious what's going on.

So is it still useable even with all these safety measures?

What else can you do???

Might just do that :)

Damn that sucks losing all your stuff that was on it.. I'd suggest now investing in a portable hard drive, they are really cheap now for 1tb or even 2tb, just to back up your irreplaceable documents and stuff for in future, and easy to hide somewhere safe.

Its sad that its come to the point where you have to take those measures. A password should suffice. But now even bolting it to the floor doesn't seem to deter would be thieves. If I caught somebody stealing my stuff I would beat them so hard they'd never touch anything that didn't belong to them again. Sorry to rain on the parade but chances of it showing up are slim to none. Best you can do is report it and hope for the best. Sorry dude, that really sucks. One day he'll get caught and hopefully by some psychopath with a gun ;)

Khagan, that's why I didn't lose much stuff, only the last couple of weeks worth by the looks of things... some photos weren't backed up - which sux... but that's about it. I have 1.5TB of back up space on two separate hard drives in two separate locations - so if one goes, the other is unlikely to have been stolen.

But I was meant to back up this weekend, unfortunately I was unable to because I forgot my power cable and the battery was flat :(

Anyway - life goes on... even if it is a little more difficult in the short term.

bios settings are cleared when you pull the bios battery out of the motherboard. Some boards have two batteries, but doubt a 4yr old one would.

If he didnt care for your files, a simple format and reinstall of windows and he could use it like his own.

Although there is software out there to break a windows password and or by pass it to access files without using windows OS.

Here is some info on how to track it using an IP address:

SLIM6Y!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!it is a shame that most enzedders have never heard of 2 very early New Zealanders, who achieved very great renown...Sadly, you will soon leave us, to teach in your homeland (OUR GREAT LOSS )....it would be a valuable thing if you would research them, and if you find it appropriate,,,,,teach the pupils about them. their names are FRANCES ALDA and OSCAR NATZKA....sadly you will have to put on your *****, to go to the airport...hope that ****-hole has not stolen those too.

sesa - I'm ashamed to be an En Zudder - you seem to know more about the culture than I do :)

But the physics side of things... Lord Rutherford of Nelson is a NEW ZEALANDER people (as is Pavlova - not the ballerina, but the yummy desert pudding).

That aside...

No laptop returned... yet...

Virides - how can I use that tracking IP? I'm not sure I could find my computer's IP address without actually having it???

I'm semi technically minded - but clearly not quite understanding how my computer (now stolen laptop) could have a traceable IP address...

Sorry should have said that this only works if you know it lol

I think these are "just incase" measures and I wasn't necessarily implying that this is what will get your laptop back, more that these are things you can do so if it ever happens again you atleast have something to try :)
