Hey,
I was just wondering if anyone out there knows anything about turtles. I would love to get one but i'm not sure what type. I would also realy like one that doesn't grow too big.
Any ideas?

IMO The best ones to choose from are
murray river turtles
eastern long neck turtles
saw shell turtles
krefts turtles

turtles

I find eastern long necked turtles very easy to keep in Vic They live outside very comfortably as long as they get full sun and have a pond they can get in & out of . Because they are very good at escaping You will need a fence probably about 18 inches high and about 4 inches underground to stop from digging. If you intend to keep in a tank a minimum 3 ft -900mm as they do like to move around.
They will require a dry area a platform to get up on and bask . They need about 8 hours of UV a day from a UV tube nec black light tube is sufficient. I have found room temp is okay any where around 20 to 25 degrees is ideal..They are not to fussy with food they will eat pretty much any thing alive you throw in crickets, worms woodies. small fish and small yabbies and do adapt to turtle pellets pretty quick. You will need good filtration under gravel filter is generally good enough with about 20 % water change a week as they are quite messy.in the water causing the water to foul pretty quick if not changed.
Hope this helps Good Luck.

Thanks guys,
We have recently gotten into yabbies and have 4 of them at the moment. When they breed we would like to feed the some of the babies to the turtle.

They like yabbies, I have one about 15cm in the pond, but after being menaced by him, the turtles keep their distance. Little yabbies will make a nice food supply for the turtles.

I've had Yabbies before that have had bubs, You'll be hard push having any left after they kill each other off, unless you have enough set ups to seperate them, But Yabbies are awesome!!

Yeah, they are so funny. We only have 4 medium sized ones (still too little to breed yet).
