i lost one of my turtles outside on 14th september.
my dad found him in the salt chlorine pool today. we've had a pool cover on it but its been getting yuk so my dads been super chlorinating it to clean it up for summer.
he's swimming fine and eating. but i'm not sure what the side effects of chlorine for turtles is and what should be done about him.

If its a long neck turtle it should be ok.

Make sure you keep it in clean water now and do extra water changes i would neutraise the clean water to before placing the turtle in it to remove chlorine etc.

Long necks have been known to survive in suage farms they are pretty strong.

If it shows any signs of illness though streight to the reptile vet.

it might turn white like Micheal Jackson LOL

yes it is very pale, the shell that it, body still dark.
is there any internal damage i should be concerned about, everything external seems fine but will keep an eye on him

A trip to the vet would not hurt, but staying home might. Should not cost to much, just a consult and I don't know if turtles count, but reptile consults seem to be cheaper than other animals (at least they are with my vet).

When we were kids my brother found a couple plate sized longnecks and I think he scrubbed there shells clean with Jiff!!! Don't quote me on that, it was a long time ago, but like others have said, they are pretty hardy creatures.

usually the chemicals die down to normal within a day or two, but with a cover. its probably didnt as the sun didnt burn off the acid etc.

usually, in a normal set pool, be it chlorine, or the new mix of lighter chemicals 'healing water' its usually fine to let your turtle go for a swim. it will clean his shell a bit, and burn off exterior parasites. unless he is sickly, or has a lack of appetite, energy. i wouldn't think it effected him too much.

i think i will end up taking him to the vet, dad has been putting in lots and lots of chlorine and stuff to get the pool ready for summer

took him to the vet, was given a saline injection (10% of his bodyweight) to flush out his system, plus some vitamins. told to do water changes every 3 days for two weeks and to rub vitamin E cream into him each day because is skin is really dry.

Good to see some one went to the vet!

i'd just hate for him to die suddenly or become sick and know i should have just taken him to the vet
i was more concerned about internal damage to organs and such as externally and behaviourly he was fine, so i took him to the vet and the extra fulid he was given should flush it out of his system.

Exactly, good move, better safe than sorry. I took my coastal in for a final once over even though I was 99% sure she was well on the mend after a few months of hassles and vet trips.
