Turtles - couple of Q's

So, I plan on picking up a couple of turtles at the Castle Hill expo next month. I've had the tank, heater and filter for about 8 months now so I think it's about time I put it all together.

I have been doing a bit of reading recently and have come across conflicting thoughts on the type of substrate to use, if any at all... Just wondering what thoughts were from turtle keepers on the forum.

Also, I found a website that had a guide to the general adult size of some turtles but I can't find the damn thing now... it would be super awesome if someone could tell me the general size of the different species...

Any other useful info people could provide me would be greatly appreciated. I have been trying to read as much as I can although I also value advice from people on here who keep turtles.
