I have a mate thats interested in getting a turtle, but he also wants to know if its possible to keep fish in with them?

I dont know much about turtles, but thought it highly unlikely, anyone just wanna confirm that?

If the fish is a larger fish, not bigger than the turtle obviously, would you have trouble with the fish going the turtle?

Thanks.

Hi,

Most fish will eventually end up as turtle food. My suggestion is not to have anything to expensive in with them

My ELN recently polished off a 3 inch Tandanus Catfish and nothing fish wise is safe in his tank. My Murrays will generally take longer to polish off any live feeders we put in with them but they will all go.

Becareful with things like Oscars as they have been known to stress out baby turts.

We keep fish with our Kreffti though we do need to replace them every few weeks, not sure where they are going

do any fish clean ponds?

Nothing that won't get eaten.

I have some freshwater mussels (to help clean the bottom) in our pond as well as catfish, gudgeon, all of which eat the filamous algae. But a UV clarifier is the way to go if you have a problem with excess algae, and as per tanks you still need to vaccum it out to clean the substrate.

If you have an open top on your tank they may be evaporating. Honest, I learnt that on here.

I had a 30cm Mangrove Jack in with a pair of Saw Shells. He was 10cm when he was introduced to the tank and the turtles never harmed him. He also never harmed them, but the turtles were wary of him and mostly kept away from the Jack.

From experience...I kept a full grown tandanus catfish with a juvenile eastern longneck, suffice to say the catfish was longer/bigger than the turtle & they both shared a 6ft long tank, ample swimming room & lots of hiding spots...

Suffice to say, they were fine during the day but both being nocturnal hunters, the turtle would hassle & stress the tandanus once the lights were out.

I woke up one morning to find that the catfish, although bigger than the turtle had suffered life-threatening injuries from being bitten & scratched.

When I was at school, there was a turtle with about a 15cm shell, so not massive, bit it was kept in a tank with 7-10cm goldfish.

It didn't kill them, but all had bites missing from their tails.

i have 4 ponds that have turtles and fish in them . only one turtle has eaten any of my fish .
the rest of the turtles chase the fish but cant catch them .

if you want fish to live with a turtle you need to start off with a few and expect to lose some,if i put in about 50 in my turts tank maybe 10 or so will learn to stay away from the turtles

Fish can also be a good indicator of water conditions. I keep a heap of native feeders and shrimp in with my guy. Hes still too small to catch them. Ive heard stories of larger or slightly more aggressive fish like cichlids, will go after them, especially when the turtle is a hatchy or juvie. If you stick to small feeders your pretty safe.
