Brian recommending the NEC tubes was enough for me too. I take someone with that much experience pretty seriously. My guess is that you'd get the same results without any tube at all though.

Not a contradiction, but maybe what I said was unclear. I agree completely that they'll be healthy with it, but still think it's probably unnecessary. Yes, I've heard of metabolic bone disease, but I've also seen many healthy reptiles which supposedly need UV but have never recieved it in any form.
I'm not experienced with bearded dragons and they may well need it for all I know. I do have one beardy and have and NEC tube on him, just in case.
I am led to believe that the best uv source/daylight combination is with an NEC blacklite and an NEC 6700k tri-phospher. Obviously you need a twin batten fluoro but this is about as close to natural sunlight as you can get. Anything brighter than a 6700k white globe will damage the eyes in reptiles.
IMO, if you can supply uv to a reptile than you should, as surely it must benefit them in some degree. I fit out all my enclosures with uv lights and if anything they all look good when lit up during the day.
Ricko, if you have your heart set on UV tubes for your snakes, so be it. Try Tim at Ultimate in SA. He sells a cheap brand made by I think Sylvania, which is according to him as good as the very expensive ReptiSuns.
