apparantly it stops the swelling

Osmosis. The saturated solution or just dry sugar draws the liquid out of the swollen bowel, which shrinks as a result. Saline (surgical) can be little irritating but is absolutely sterile.

Thanks for that. My first thought would have been salty water, but sugar makes sense, too. Thanks for that info in case I need it!

Saline is salty water. :D. Just being a smart a....

Yes, that was also my first thought.... ;)

Just to clarify... I said salty water instead of saline because plenty of people wouldn't have a stash of surgical-grade saline in their cupboard (though, funnily enough, I do )

Now, stop causing trouble, Michael :p

great just discovered that shes having another prolaps and she somehow got it past the band aide strip!

probably best to go to the vet if shes done it again.

what causes prolapse anyway? constipation/impaction?

Vet vet vet.. that's the only thing that will help her now. Home remedies are all well and good until your ackie is dead.

Sammy there are many causes for prolapse - straining such as constipation/impaction is one, but there are others too including a weakening of the muscles involved in "holding it all in"

Mate, to the vet quickly. It sounds like she is trying to push out faeces and the bowel is twisted.

have had a similar problem with my python yesterday, if the prolapse comes out again water based lubricant will keep it moist until you get to the vet. hope all goes well!!

grrrrr my parents said she can't go to the vet (because of there financial situation, especialy since mum has slipped
a disc in her back and they have had to spend most of the money on taking her here there and every where) there is
now nothing i I can do to get her to the vet though there is some good news...............
on the damp CLEAN toilet paper I found an undigested cricket and some other substance which I reakon is sand......
therefor the prolaps was probably caused by impaction........ there has been no prolaps since the second prolaps
so that is good news obviously I will not be putting her back on the sand until she is older and I will not be feeding her for a while
thanks sooooooooooo much for all your help guys, will let you know if there are any dramas.
Thanks again

Glad to hear she's not prolapsed again, mate. Sorry to hear about your mum, as well. Hope she (the ackie!) stays well. There's been a lot of good advice on this thread.
