A friend of mine just ran a course of Baytril on a stumpy tail that had RI. He asked me is it worth post treament giving it Probiotics? The logic is there, that the good gut flora has been killed. I thought it was a good question that i dont know the answer to.

what do people think?

i would use a post antibotic treatment regardless,
if he will take it verafarms herpa boost as well as a probotic,

cheers

I have heard that it can be very beneficial, as well as after using sulfa drugs.
Perhaps research it a little more, but using the powdered probiotics from health food shops has been recommended to me by some beardie breeders (in water, syringing it, or however you like to administer it)
Regards,
Jasspa

depends on the case, but baytril isnt excellent on anaerobes, so probably not nesscary especially post treatment, if you wanted to help useing probiotics is most effective during the treatment.

I generally give most rescues a probiotic treatment. Helps reduce stress as well.

A fascinating concept. Would the same need apply after a course of Fortum? My olive required injections for 6 weeks. He has come out of it just fine without any post-treatment care but it would be interesting to hear either way.

if its gone of its food, definately, cant hurt either way. :p

I have never given probiotics after antibiotic treatment and have a pretty high success rate.

Same Jonno, i have never used them, the theory is good though. but Probiotics for lizards would have to be rather different for reptiles then humans, so i would have to say there probably isnt anything of much use available

Yes fortum would be considered a better candidate being a 3rd gen cephalosporin, which is much better on your anaerobes.

Ok so on the subject of baytril, how long would a hatchy normally have to be on this for an RTI and how soon should you see improvement. Also if no improvement what is the next step?

thats what i was thinking..is the gut flora of a reptile different to a mammal?
