G'day all,
A quick word of thanks to the VHS for a great meeting last night. Despite the technical difficulties... which were overcome with some illuminatingly simple lateral thinking... Gavin Bedford's talks were very interesting, and his photographs of the Bullo River region quite amazing!
The night capped off a long month for me in Melbourne, and put me in a great frame of mind for the next four months of fieldwork in PNG.
Hopefully a few of the VHS members will also give consideration to participating in the study of snakebite in Victorian hospital that the Australian Venom Research Unit is coordinating. If you picked up a consent form at the VHS meeting last night, please fill it in and post back to AVRU as soon as possible. If any other Victorian herpers are interested - this is a study Dr Ken Winkel will be running that is looking at the hospital management of snakebites in Victoria, and especially the care given to patients bitten by snakes from outside the state. The aim is to produce a standard protocol book for Victorian hospitals to help ensure that patients get the best care possible. Ken is reviewing past snakebite case histories to look at management practice and identify areas that need 'revision'.
Of anyone wants to contribute access to their past medical files, all will be kept in confidence by AVRU and the identities of all 'patients' kept anonymous. Contact Dr Ken Winkel on (03) 8344 7753 or
[email protected] for more info and a consent form.
AVRU are also taking pre-orders for a new herpbook - 'Venomous bites and stings in Papua New Guinea' - 400 pages and over 130 colour photos: dealing with snakes, spiders, insects and marine organisms that bite or sting. There is lots of great snake stuff and some sensational photography. Register interest by emailing either myself (
[email protected]) or Dr Ken WInkel at AVRU direct (
[email protected]). The book comes out in early September and will sell for $50.00 plus post and packing.
Cheers all,
David Williams
