Yeah thats sooo true Tatelina
Firedragon, what exactly do you hav 2 do for the course?

I did all the courses, but never went on to actually work officially as a vet nurse (though did more than enough work experience). Was offered many jobs, but had no interest in actually doing the work. (I love studying, so did it more for myself and to help me into a zookeeping job) The pay is low, the downs will drag you way down, but the highs are amazing (to see the look on a childs face when you give them back their dog is amazing) Personally I couldnt cope emotionally (my OH got sick of me coming home crying). I was told I will toughen up, but I like who I am, I like to feel compassion, so I didnt want to 'toughen up'

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Cheers

Erm, I forgot about this thread. Whoops. Lol.

Just to drag it back up again, how bad is the pay in terms of annual salary?

And those who have worked as vet nurses... how did you actually get into it? I'm really just trying to figure out what the best 'first step' would be - are those correspondance courses a waste of time? Cert I in Animal Studies...?

Back in 1992 it was $10.98 per hour. I got paid $13.00 an hour only cos' the boss said i worked my butt off.

They don't pay annual salaries though?

I'm trying to compare it to what I'm currently earning.

Just read on a TAFE website that the average is $30,000 - $40,000 per year. If that's true, it's more than what I'm earning now

thats about right, though there is alot of hrs done per year

my hours were 11- 7 Mon - Fri and more often than not it was till 8 or 9. PLUS 8 till 1pm Saturdays and of course you always had your last minute emergencies call up and when you ask how long the symptoms had been there for, the typical answer was "oh about 2 weeks or so".

yep stupid people, or they say i thought hed be allright. i only ran over him the other day and he looked fine to me.....................................stupid people

Miss B - I did volunteer work at a local vet for a few years during high school - no qualifications or anything like that though...

The job was okay, certainly not what I had hoped from it, definately some great moments - but some terrible ones as well...

As has been mentioned by a few already, the smell of parvovirus has stuck to me this day - it is the exact same smell that comes off a rancid three week old dead body...I could have done without seeing countless puppies like that...

There is quite a thrill as the Vet does an emergency operation in the middle of an electrical storm and loses power to the surgery half way through, everyone pitching in under torchlight and coming through successful...

I would suggest you give it a go, you will always regret it otherwise - however, job satisfaction has it's limits as well - I love my job, but would drop it in a heartbeat if it meant the pressure of my mortgage was lessened by a higher salary...

Just some food for thought...

Miss B, i think you will find that most professions working with animals pay pretty average, and generally treat you like dirt also. My partner (sorry i forgot to introduce her at the gecko course, she was the one beside me:)) has done work with animals for years and i think purely for the passion of working with them, but the money was fairly average and she tried alot of jobs, dogs, polo clubs, vet surgeries to name a few, but there was alot of back stabbing there. The biggest problem is there are so many people who want to work with animals the bosses can get away with paying next to nothing and treating you like crap. Certainly isn't the case all the time, but it is an issue to keep in mind. Now we prefer to earn decent money and look after animals as a more enjoyable hobby.

i dont have a good answer but good luck, and only choose something that will make you happy. thats is my advice. anything to do with animals is fun right?

Thanks for the advice peeps :)

I applied for a job last Friday ... a local vet clinic was advertising for a trainee nurse. I got a call back this morning :) So, I should have an interview sometime this week. Wish me luck 8)

((from jas ;) ))

Thanks guys :)

I have been gathering some interview tips from the helpful folk in chat, here's what I've got so far:

1. Don't admit to a fetish for men in uniform... particularly scrubs
2. Don't ask if I can borrow their co2 chamber to gas my rodents
3. Don't ask about their policy regarding internet use during work hours

Any more? :D

Thanks guys :)

2. Don't ask if I can borrow their co2 chamber to gas my rodents, ask them for some chloroform instead.
