hey guys, just got home to a nice surprise of a bearding laying eggs, ive only had her bout 3 weeks and its retained sperm from last year.. very nice surprise due to who she was put over and im going to have some stunning hatchos if i can get em there. i dont think im to late..

ive rushed around and bought some supplies and i called a friend and got some advice but id like to know im doing this right.

ive got a new 50l starmaid tub, a new aquarium heater 25w with thermo, new smaller sistema comtainers and vericulite(sp). anyone got diagrams of how to put this incubator together and any tips. i searched but dont have time to look through 200 threads.. anything important i kneed to know would be great.. cheers guys.

Toby

What are you using as the actual incubator? the 50l starmaid tub??

If you dont have a spare fridge handy get an esky, take a thermostat off one of your enclosures and throw some heat cord/ heat globes in the esky.

Get one container with a lid, put a hole in one corner of the lid. Get a smaller container which can fit inside the larger one and prop it up something. If you are too rushed don't worry about propping it up just put one container inside of the other. Fill the larger container up with about 2 cm of water. Place the eggs on some type of grate inside the smaller container. Don't put the lid on the smaller container. Put the lid on the larger container with one hole in it and put it inside the esky at 30-31 degrees.

Goodluck!

thanks, yeah ive set up kinda like that atm, big star maid with water in and 2 bricks, water up to just under the top of the bricks. then have 2 sistema with vermiculite (damp) 50-50 on the bricks and a water heater at 28 in the water. this is how the breeder told me to set it up quick. do i put any air holes in the sistemas? do i have air holes in the stairmaid? do i have it wrong all together??

I just put one hole about 1-2mm wide on the right hand back corner of the larger 50l tub. Sorry I thought you were trying to do the 'no substrate' method.

Thanks for your reply means a lot. Do I open the smaller tubs each day to air them? Should I get some anti fungal powder just incase??

No lids on the smaller tubs, just on the larger tub, with a hole on one corner of the tub, optional flyscreen taped to the hole to prevent escapes (which although doesn't seem possible can indeed occur). This will also help the air to circulate through the smaller tubs and to even out the temperatures.

The temperatures in the smaller tubs will be the same as in the large tub, and will facilitate good incubation.

Those inner tubs with the eggs look like they have no air holes in them. Another idea is to cut out the middle part of the small tub lids and replace what was cut out with a flyscreen, this would stop escapes into the larger tub while allowing the air to circulate properly.

Overall a very good job, and hope you get some hatchlings from your efforts ;)

So no lid on the little ones and a small hole in the large tub. 28 degree water, and I can place fly screen over the small tubs as they get closer to prevent escapees??

If this is wrong I'm not bein ignorant I promise, just trying to understand right to give em the best chance :)

the water heater seems to only be getting the air temp in the tub around 22degrees. do i need a more powerful one? will they die by the morning before i can get to the pet store to buy a nwe one? ???

maybe chuck a heat cord or heat mat under the tub to help increase the temp

Justdragons , I would leave the lids on the egg tubs , you are best to have it sealed up so no fly screen or holes ...

How long have you got this setup running because from my experience a fish heater takes 24-48 hours to heatup to full potential

cheers dicky, and reptile newb. i have just gone to chris and got the exo terra off him as i was struggling to get the temps right. cheers chris. anyone know if i should have small holes in the containers inside? i have the same sistemas with the eggs in them but put 5 small holes in them last night.. :/ should i cover these holes?

ventilation holes in the containers are perfect

1 or 2 small holes will not be a problem ... but I would certainly leave lids on them.

cheers dicky. in each corner i have 1 small 3mm hole and one center but im still getting good condensation.
