If you are into pythons, then I would suggest Coastals, Diamonds and Inland types, all pretty tolerant to beginners. I have a Coastal myself and its putting up with me very well.
 
Go for a Woma .They are a decent size as hatchies, look pretty, feed well, display well in cages ( mac , childrens and stims hide most of the time ) . Are cheap enough now for a beginner , and they don't get really big ( except for the SA variety ). Very underated , should be promoted more as a first snake to keep . Just my thoughts .
