I got my first pythan a week and a half ago he is a Vic Carpet Yearling, he was very easy to handle for the first few days very calm but since then he hasnt wanted to come out from his rock house and when i try to pick him up he strikes like mad ( he hasnt bitten me yet becouse im to quick at pulling away) and goes nuts around the enclosure i can only pick him up when he is on the move i thought he maybe shedding but there is no sign of this and his last meal was 15 days ago but wont eat for me. Should i just leave him alone for a while to settle or should i persist with him a little each day. But dont want to stress him out, any advise would be greatly appreciated cheers :?

soz i didnt read it prop... prob just being a bit "cage defensive"..;)

Some take awhile to settle in, if i was you i wouldnt touch it till i know its comfortable and stress free, a good way to know this will be to wait till it feeds, leave it for 72hours then try and see how it goes, if its still the same, cage defensive it will probably be...

how can you stop a snake being cage defensive? or is it something you just have to live with?

Im not sure what everyone else will say to this
But let it bite you if it has a go at you
Dont pull back
You could harm it if it makes contact and you pull away

im with jannico, remember if she bites you she could hurt herself far more than you..give her a day or 2..try a feed.. if not then start the handling and offer food weekly.. 8) good luck

woo i was right haha
:p
It took me ages to do just let my water hit me
like i literally had to hold my hand with my other hand
Just let her settle
and feed her at night in a few days turn the lights off and keep quiet

Cool thanks but what do i do now, just leave it for a while till it eats ive tried three times now lol, and do they stop being cage defensive, i was going to let him bite so i knew what it would feel like so i wouldnt pull away but i chickend out, i put a pillow case in front of the glass so he couldnt see us walking past thought that might help do u think that i should leave it there or take it of so he gets used to seeing people go past thanks again

when ever u want to feed it , id still let it settle in for a few weeks before handling it anymore .

WOHO......... a month today was his last meal i have wasted about 8 small rats on him over the time ive had him. so tonight i decided to brain one of the rats and rub abit of the brain over the head of the rat, he wouldnt have a bar of it at first prob 1 hour later i looked over and he had it in his mouth and it was gone within ten mins yayyyyyy lol

ah also forgot to ask the rats are a little bit bigger than a large mouse is one enough or should i try 2 next time, r would that be over feeding??? :)

feeding

imo you should stop handling your snake and let it settle in.at the end of the day its far more important that your snake eats than it stopping bitting.i give all my carpets at least a week to settle in.if they display behavior like yours i give them 2 weeks or more to settle before offering food.put its tank in a quiet part of your house.the only human contact it should get is you changing its water every other day.this will stop it stressing and settle it in.once you get it eating you will have plenty time to calm it down.if it does not settle then try moving it into a smaller tank.i usually tape up all the sides of a nervous snakes tank leaving just a 4inch square un taped to let light in.if a snakes in too big a tank it can get stressed and defensive.
hope this helps

after a meal your snake should have a visable bulge in its stomach.i usually feed 2 food items of the size he's been eating for 4 weeks, then i move him up to his next sized food item.this way the snake gets used to the bigger meals but it also has the option of refusing the 2nd food item if it feels its too much.if its happy to eat 2 of what food size its eating at present then everything should work out fine after moving it up a food size.

Hi shaunyboy, i havnt handled him for over a week maybe nearly two weeks the last time i had to pick him up was to put him in a clickclack cos i had to clean out the enclosure, i had coverd up the glass on the front of the tank only left like a 4inch gap at one end but the last couple of days he has been looking out the gap watching me and when he senses me move he will come up to that area and watch me he dosnt go hide but ill still leave him for a while before handling him again. He was on mice at first then went to smaller rats so it says on the feed chart that came with him when i got him and he does have a bulge next time i feed him i will offer 2 rats and see how he goes with them thanks for the advice.
cheers shannan

the enclosure

what size is the enclosure or tub or whatever youre keeping it in coz if its to big then it might be scared of the enclosure or tub if thats the case thats probably why its constantly hiding and striking at you

Some snakes won't eat the 1st week u relocate them. best 2 wait a week b4 feeding them.If don't eat then leave snake another whole week b4 tryin 2 feed again & so fourth. feed ur snake & if cant c buldge in stomach next day, go up in food size the next week. better 2 feed 1 bigger mouse pr rat than multiple little 1's. yearling snake bite don't hurt much.

good sign

imo its a good sign that he's having a look out his little window.imo its showing he's starting to get a bit of confidence.my last bad eater ttook 10 month to have a wee peek out its window.after i noticed it out more (as it used to hide and only come out for a few hours in the middle of the night) i made its window a little bigger.then once it looked settled again i'd make the window bigger.eventually i took all the tape of and she eats anything you put in front of her.how long had yours been on rats for before you got it ? ive had carpets feeding on mice then moved them onto rats, they take rats for a few weeks then stop because imo they preffered the taste of mice.its really worth persevering and keeping it on rats.as it takes a lot of mice in one sitting to feed an adult carpet.
cheers shaun
