Looking for living arrangement info from people currently in the Australian Defence Force Full time, and specifically what their view is towards pets, specifically reptiles. I thought I remembered there being a few people from here in the defence force that kept herps but cant remember who.

Cheers, Jay

Usually depends upon what the Base SI's say if you are living on. These days the powers to be are more tolerant providing it is a reasonable number of caged animals/living space and they are kept in a clean condition. With the contracting out of accomodation services there is sometimes a problem with the odd reptile hating accomodation manager, however that only becomes a problem when or if they require access to your room. Room inspections for OR's could also be an interesting time. As a RAAF EHSURV I've never had a problem with living-in personnel wanting to keep animals a suitably sized caged animal/s in an accommodation room providing it was kept in a clean/hygienic state. Best of luck.

At the moment, i am the only member that i know of or the system knows of that is legally allowed to keep herps in service accomodation. I had permission given to me by the barracks commander to keep them in the live in lines with me ( and it helps to be mates with the barracks manager through defence sport). Although, they had to make sure that they could put me in a block with no other occupants, and depending on the base you are at or going to be at, this might prove a difficult task.

If you havent joined yet, then through your initial training ie: Kapooka you will have no chance at all. And then after kapooka, you will have even less of a chance keeping any herps in a training establishment.

But, there are only 2 answers you can get from a well written minute for approval, and thats yes or no.

What are you looking at joining?? (thats to say you arent in already????)

Going for Electrical technician in the navy, so wouldn't be able to keep herps anyways (at see 8/13 months ive heard). Just curious as to the legality of it.
