I have been reading through pages on the internet but Im not sure why my bearded dragons beard go's black? he is a red phase bearded dragon and he changes colour alot. I was wondering what are the main reasons for bearded dragons beards going black, I have found so many answer but which is the right one!

I could be wrong but I think it's about dominance and threat behaviour

There is every chance your Bearded Dragon is a male, their beards go black to show other male Bearded's they are dominant and in control of their territory.

There are some good books available in Reptile shops that you can get hold of, so you can learn alot about their natural behaviour aswell as, diets, husbandry, health, housing, heating, handling, breeding, sexing, that l would advice you to get for yourself.:)

My boy use to do this in breeding season when i would put him with a girl but thats the only time I had seen this. But haven't had to much to do with beardies

It can be be for a number of reasons.

Hey there gorgeous, look how manly I am with my black beard or hey tough guy, you wanna piece me? Well do ya?

my boy's beard goes jet black when he gets horny, and just a bit black when he is warm. when he's sleepy is is just normal grey/yellow

Well I got mine on sunday, and the store told me it was a girl so is this possible females go black, becuase my beardy go's black all the way down his stomache and from what i know only males do that?

Well then Its a good bet your so called female Is a male and Is showing his the beardie boss

my female does go very dark aswell, but it's usually her whole body, not just the beard alone

it's just how they thermoregulate themselves. black = absorbs more heat, grey or colours= reflect/absorb less heat

My male always does it when he dosen't like what's going on :p

Thermoregulation, eh? That's a newbie one. Oops, new one. I've always been told, and seen it used, as a way to display either dominance or desire to mate.

when i said thermo regulate i was talking about the whole body changing colour, not just the beard, yes the beard changing by itself is for display purposes, but my previous post before that and the OP response was in regards to the whole body changing colour

Hmmm... well there does seem to be some guesswork going on here!

My females beard goes black as, she is a solitary animal has never had contact with other beardies, and yes she has layed eggs.

back to the drawing board...
