What I really think is required is an animal protection authority that ecourages quality animal husbandry for all animals rather than trying to regulate what can and cannot be kept. To my mind the RSPCA is out of touch with reality and is certainly out of touch with herpers.

That said any alternative authority would be quite right in objecting to toys that suggest abuse of animals.

(...and this has nothing to do with staving kids in hospital and raising such issues only clouds the argument.)

So when are we going to get stuck into Toyota?
Most of their adds involve running chickens over or doing mean things to other animals.
Wheres that line in the sand again?

Like I said before, in the USA every police department has it's own animal cruelty police officers. They prosecute people for abusing animals but it done through the goverment, not some dodgy animal rights organisation. The only reason the goverments allow it is to save money. Well I'm affraid thats not good enough. What next? Drug rehab orgainsations in charge of policing drugs and vice? Womens shelters in charge of policing and procecuting domestic violence and rape? It wouldn't be accepted in any other area of law and shouldn't be here.

Thats a pretty damn good point you got their, Stiffler... next time I get asked for donations, I think I'll decline (though I might still toss the occassional kitty litter or tin of dog food in the RSPCA's "Animal Charity" bin at Kmart. (or are those things dodgy/scammy too?) (It makes me wonder if the staff dont just put the stock back on the shelf?)

Now that's taking it a bit to far Wrasse. All this time spent trying to get pythons to eat rat flavoured Tofu and you go doing stuff like that. Be ashamed, be very ashamed. :)

The RSPCA lost me years ago when a friend and I called the police about a cow running along a busy Brisbane road. It was the middle of the night but it was also a weekend and still a fair bit of traffic. They said to call the rspca. We did that and they said they couldn't do anything about it as there was only one person working at the time. Obviously doing important stuff like answering the phone to say "we cant do anything". They said to call the police. After a few more phonecalls to police and RSPCA we gave up. We chased it off the road and into someones garden. On the news the next night was a little piece about how the coppers shot this cow running free in the suburbs. The RSPCA put in their 2 cents saying that if someone had called them and let them know they could have removed it. They haven't got a single cent out of me since. That was 11 years ago.

P.s Lmao love the pic Wrasse, is it actually in your carpets mouth?

I've thought the matter over very carefully, & I've finally figured out that I can not only keep the RSPCA happy, but numerous other lobby groups as well. Therefore, in the interest of political correctness, tree-hugging, inadequate & uninformed govt departments, bird watchers, rodent fanciers, & professional protesters everywhere, I have decided to boldly break new ground & attempt to train my snakes to become vegetarians. It may cause a few initial problems for the elapids: after all, how will they know if they have successfully envenomed a carrot for example? I mean, even without a strike, the carrot will just lay there inert anyway. However, I refuse to be deterred in this. The RSPCA is sure to notice immediately that someone is actually paying attention to their "all creatures great & small unless they are a herp or some other newsworthy animal" propaganda. They may even offer me a post enforcing the new reptile dietry regime. Of course it may cause some unfortunate side effects, such as severe death by starvation in a large percentage of the test animals, but at least I wont get charged with cruelty, as the victims will only be herps, & thus outside the field of interest of the Revenue Scrounging Parasite Collective of Australia.
Oh, do I REALLY sound cynical & sceptical about the agenda of our esteemed animal protection organisation? Apologies, I assure you it was completely unintentional.....

Well, I'm afraid I have to go against the thread here and agree with the RSPCA on this one.

The MD of Jaycar described it as a novelty and "a bit of a giggle", but it's a toy marketed to children over the age of three, and as a toy for kids I think it is very inappropriate. As a novelty for adults it's OK, but not for children who are still very impressionable and may not understand the concept of 'novelty toy' as oppsoed to reality.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Children over the age of three warning is to protect them (manufactuer) from being sued most items at jacar novelty are not suitable for children at all but must carry this warning.
There is still abook out called 1001 ways to kill a cat not banned a novelty item.
Although I do not agree with the RSPCA on a lot of things I think animals in general would be worse off with out them. A necessary evil.

Anyway there are plenty of other toys that are just as inappropriate - what about "Hungry Hippos" for example. (At least if a child tries to do that to a hippo it will be over pretty quickly...)

The RSPCA are media tarts

With all fairness. I had to deal with RSPCA only on few ocassions, but each time they did right by me. But I understand by reading this forum that lot of people have different experiance.

the rspca gets all angry about a flamin toy when they should be getting angry at things like the gasing of corrella and cockatoos etc.
