Hey Guys, I'm new here.. been prowling around for a few weeks with nothing really to say.

But now i got a question... what is the best way to get rid of wild rodent? I've tried laying heaps of traps, but i catch one occassionally. They got into our bar fridge on the deck and chewed the wiring, and i was wanting to put an old couch out there but i'm not so sure now, i don't want them nesting in it. I don't want to use ratsak or anything similar cause we have a wild coastal carpet about the place. Any suggestions would be great.

Cheers.

you can make a simple thing from a coke bottle....

cut the bottle lid bit off and turn it inside the bottle, on the ring part where the lid would go put flexi wire mesh in a cone like shape, cut the mesh in a way that there is 'spikes' on the end.....
sort of to the same effect as a yabby trap...they can get in but not out.

if that fails and you see one, hose it down. They can't run nearly as fast when they are wet...then catch em

or shoot them

That's pretty commendable Shags! Most people don't think of those sorts of issues sadly - it's up to people like us who love these animals to watch out for their wellbeing :?

http://www.smithsax.btinternet.co.uk/products.htm - this method sounds really stupid!

Here is another option:

A Victorian company called Elliott Scientific Equipment used to manufacture live capture traps for both rats and mice. They are long metal tubes with spring loaded doors at both ends. They are better ventilated than the black plastic variety but also quite expensive - if they are still available.

address:- 1 Sayers Road, Upwey VIC 3158

phone:- 03 9754 2171

Either one of those or just shoot em  hehehehe

Personally I reckon some sort of explosive charge would be the best! Either that or some liquid nitrogen then you can toss em and bust them into a million bits! (Yikes! Did I say that out aloud?) Sometimes the rats are either just too cunning, or too big for conventional traps. In all seriousness, a humane approach is always the best when disposing of a living animal.

Speaking of wild rodents Ive been catching a stack lately in traps around the house, do you guys feed field mice to ya herps? obviously not straight away but say after a few months in the freezer would it be ok?

At work recently I was standing next to the barrel of liquid nitrogen and asked the nearest person how many CESAR employees have thought about doing that. The response was a very cold stare and the words "I'd say you're the first"

I would be a very humane way of euthenasing them you must admit!

oops, that should read "It" would be a very humane way...

I am not a humane way of euthenasia..... that I'm aware of.

Anyway, I'm sure my collegue was mistaken, many other CESAR employees have considered it... I'm sure!

The problem with rats is that they are neophobic - they tend to stay away from anything new or unfamiliar. If they live in your backyard, and you introduce a new way to trap them, they'll leave it alone for a bit until they're used to it. Even then, they'll be cautious when they do finally investigate. As soon as you get your first rat caught/killed, the others will be extremely wary of the trap. Mice, on the other hand, are stupid little opportunists.

There are some live traps around that will catch multiple animals live, but then you have to work out how to kill them.

:p

Liquid nitrogen.....:D

Yeah............ a little on the expensive side, and tends to evaporate pretty quickly (it is at -196 degrees Celcius).

:p

A couple of sticks of jelly would be more fun ;-)

We have caught wild rats in our cat trap before.
