Hi 2 questions, first and main one is anyone know any good herping spots around Melbourne? I'm about 5 mins drive from Melbourne airport so spots near there or no more than 30 minutes drive from that general area would be good. I see the odd jacky dragon in woodlands park but not much else...
Ill start from last night and go backwards a few weeks.
First up last night was a young Olive python.
Olive Python by R. Francis, on Flickr
I then found a DOR black headed python which i was disapointed about as i really wanted to see one. I then came across this little mulga snake...
Hi All,
I photographed this lizards west of Newman (North West WA) yesterday and would like to know if anyone can id it and tell me more about the species. It was really tolerant of me as long as i moved slowly and deliberate. (I hope the image is attached)
cheers AL
I had a look through my folders and discovered that I had more wild herp pics than I realised and thought I'd throw them in here together. I know some of the species but not all but I'm happy to just post them and see how many can be identified by the experts in here... something I am far from...
I recently had a week break from work so decided to visit a couple of my favourite areas in the eastern deserts. The first destination was the Lake Eyre Basin near Winton in central western Queensland. This is one of the relatively close places for me to herp but it was a 26 hour drive from my...
We need some ideas on what to put in our enclosure. It's currently home to Slink, our blue-tongue, after the loss of Maggie, but that is a real waste of the vertical space :(
We're likely to go with frillies again, but haven't committed at this stage - we're looking for a lizard(s) that will...
Hi all,
After a brief hiatus I'm going to try and post a little more, upload more stuff to flickr and my other site (that i'm not allowed to have in my signature), or, in the very least, catch up and write up a few of the field herping threads that should have gone up here and there.
I...
A colleague and I recently got back from a herping trip through the Pilbara ranges. We were hoping to travel further north to the port headland area to try our luck for some Womas and Black headeds but unfortunately we were hit by the full force of mother nature. When it rains up there it...
So not so long ago I was over in WA for a bit more than two weeks. The trip was with my family celebrating my finishing school and was primarily with the aim of finding as many geckos as possible.
We started off in Perth where I got to see a couple new species for me, both little brown...

I had to use lots of accumulated leave this year and I never like to waste it at home. So, after returning from Italy, I set off on a photography trip with a friend (Ted) and his son (Andrew) from Arizona. Ted and I explored the deserts in California and Mexico 40 years ago when we were in...
Hi Everyone.
Just got back from a trip up to Mt Gould (NW of Meekatharra) with a mate.
Turned out to be a good trip, even though the first 2 days we had rain and that I was sick as can be for more than half the time we were up.
It is still a bit cool up there at the moment, unfortunately we...
Doing a bit of a stroll around the place last week I managed a few herp photos that might be of interest here. I'm not the best on ID but others will probably know.
The only snake I managed to get, almost as thin as a boot lace, Furina ornata, Orange-naped Snake.
An interesting turtle...
I found this yesterday walking my dog. This is a new species for me and i'm not sure on what it is. SVL was about 110-120mm, tail about 1.5 times the SVL, it was basking on flat sand stone rocks at about 4.30 in the arvo in the West Arnhem stone country. I know it's a bad pic, but i'm not into...
This picture was taken by a friend in the kimberleys today, I'm moving there in 3 weeks.
I know it's not a great picuture for ID but maybe someone can i.d..
This post includes photos of the other animals that I encountered while travelling through the central western Queensland.
I always enjoy seeing these beautiful Yellow-spotted Monitors (Varanus panoptes). They often seem fearless and I can walk along with them without them running away...
With some of the current threads of late relating to sub species / species of snakes. I thought it may be benificial for some people to have a read and think about the meanings of these words, and how / where these snakes fit into these meaning...take from it what you will
"Species" Oxford...
At last, here is my final installment of the photo guide to Aussie lizards. Work was all consuming for awhile but things are settling again.
This post will cover the dragons and monitors.
Burn's Dragon (Amphibolurus burnsi) -- the first photo is of a lizard near Hughenden, Qld. I think...
Here is a different view of some of the Australian lizards. Macro shots often reveal intricate patterns that are not so obvious in the normal full-body or portrait photographs. When examined like this, these lizards seem to be living, breathing works of art.
1) Eastern Spiny-tailed Gecko...
I've just returned from a trip to the Gulf of Carpentaria, north of Mount Isa. I think the highlights were the olive pythons (we found two) and Cryptoblepharus zoticus (Cryptoblepharus is my favourite skink genus), plus the bats.
Species marked with an asterisk (*) are ones which I hadn't...
Heya guys and girls
I heard some scratching around today when I was in the shed and found this little guy/girl trying to jump out of a bucket that the tacker must of fallen into, but as the title said is this a very young bearded dragon? Its only about 5-8cm long and Ive done a search but its...
My son and I visited Karijini National Park in the Pilbara of Western Australia for several days in November, 2005. This park is famous for its beautiful red rock gorges. Some of these gorges have permanent water and of course, where there is water, there is abundant life.
Here are a few...
On the trip in February, 2007, my friend and I also visited the Meekatharra/Mt. Magnet/Sandstone in the Goldfields region of Western Australia. Here are photos of some of the habitats and animals that we saw..
... granite outcrops were frequent and these were good for a variety of reptiles...
