The dry habitats of southwestern Queensland are good for a variety of gecko species. We saw several species of these lizards on all of our night drives in November 2006 and October 2007.
Fat-tailed Gecko (Diplodactylus conspicillatus
This was my first Fat-tailed Gecko from eastern...
In the last couple years, I have visited the channel country of southwestern Queensland on two occasions. The first trip was with my son in November, 2006. The daily temperatures in November were already 40C+. We found many reptiles but it was too hot to have much of a chance at finding a...
I have heard that most elapids are easier to handle than most pythons.I am told as hatchlings they are flighty but dont often bite.I have a mate with a red belly black wich he free handles all the time and he siad he trusts his RBB more than most of his pythons.Do you agree with his...

Can anyone tell me - are there any stories of rare or undescribed Australian snake species? These might be extremely rare (and known species), or species now presumed extinct, or there might be stories describing snakes that do not fit any known descriptions (for example "it was...

G'day guys,
Here's some photo's from the course we ran in late November. The course was a great success (despite everything conspiring against us on Saturday morning!), with everyone having a ball, but most importantly learning how to safely identify, capture and relocate real venomous snakes...
Here is a pic of an adult Pilbara woma that has a slightly unusual black hue to it head that is normally absent in adults found around here. Its ventral area displays strong black pigmentation through it as well.

Visited Wildlife World at Darling Harbour yesterday afternoon. Never been before, was surprised at how much they had crammed into it, and the fact the enclosures all seemed quite large (for the most part).

Just some pics I took at Billabong Koala Park.

Can anyone tell me how the scientists come to understand that rear fanged snakes are more primitive in their evolution compared to the front fanged elapids.
Is it because their venom is a less complicated molecular substance?
It is a common discussion amongst snake enthusiasts as to how vens compare re; toxicity, deadliness, etc...
I thought you might find this table interesting, it is based on comparison with the toxicity of the Indian Cobra venom, which is assigned a 1 rating.
The table is not mine, but comes...

Hey all, correct me if I'm wrong - but BHPs and Woma's don't have heat-sensing pits do they?
My question is why not? And also, do they just compensate with their tongue and sight?
