Hi all,
I'm working on a uni assignment where I have to design a set of postage stamps and I have chosen Australian snakes as the subject. I'm trying to think of a name for the series that is positive. I'm sure we've all heard the negative ones: sneaky, slimy, creepy, stealthy, etc but I wanted...
Had a close encounter with this guy/girl this morning while fishing in Coffs Harbour. It was cruising through the mangroves, not where I was expecting to see one!! Anyway, I know absolutely nothing about elapids, but I'm curious....
Is this a gravid girl or just a nice big healthy snake? Growing...
What is a good way/design to house some red bellie black snakes in a outdoor enclosure in Vic that will be able to give them sufficient sunlight, but also be fully child proof. Does anyone know where i can find and threads or photos of out door snake pits?
Hey folks,
I was just interested to see how many Venomous snake keepers do not use any artificial heat when that particular snake is from your local.
So to explain, I am from Victoria, and with Red Bellied Black snakes, Tiger Snakes, Copperheads I do not use any heat at all, the cages don't...
Hey i was just curios on why snakes hiss pref bhp. mine hisses every time im handling him and im just wondering for what reason. he doesn't seem aggressive at all and seems to handle quite well. Has anyone else had this happen to them and wondered why also ? .
Despite having close to 20yrs experience the Mrs has decided that I need to just up the safety a little bit as we have a two year old and another baby on the way. I have been thinking a shift box would most likely do the job and keep her happy although after a while you get to know your snakes...
Hi,
Looking for a Juvie Red Bellied Black Snake. If you are breeding or no anyone that is and can pass me their details it would be appreciated.
Would accept any snake from 0-6mths.
Happy to pay freight for the right animal.
Don't care about sex of the animal.
Thanks Chris
I have recently been approved for my class one elapid license. Looking for something along the lines of a red belly or similar species with same temperament and ease of care. preferably in the Sydney/blue mountains area. if its easier please text or call 0458525389 with what you have to offer...
Hey guys, my wifes friend lives out at Dural and shes having a bit of a problem with snakes coming into her property. One of her dogs has been bitten by a red belly and today one of her other dogs mauled a diamond python.
Does anyone live near that area who could possibly be of assistance if...
I don't know if this qualifies as 'news' since it's from 2008, but I stumbled across this article recently ...
The snake that eats toads to steal their poison : Not Exactly Rocket Science
Apologies if it had been posted previously, or is common knowledge, but I found it intriguing!
Hi, its been a while between posts. Just curious to know how what depth will a male and female RBB probe? Has anything been written about probing/sexing elapids?
Sometime it takes a pic like this to make you realise how awe inspiring the King Cobra is. I think we should make this species an honourary Australian, just for being awesome.
Hey I am considering buying my first ever elapid, at the moment i'm only holding one other snake (monty my spotted) but I've always been intrigued with the more lethal side of herps.
would love some advice on a good elapid to start off with especially for someone who hasn't dealt with them...
I think these are a great idea and they do work well to stop dogs from attacking wildlife and thus avoid the snakebite that comes with this behaviour.
I realise everyone should train their dog and spend the time on doing so.
But there are a lot of people who own dogs that haven't trained...
I have a class 1 rep licence have held since 2010.
I rang NPWS today to enquire about what i need to do to get a red belly black snake.
I was told that i need to hold a class 2 rep for a year an that i could then apply for a venomous rep licence an could get a red belly black.
I ask is this...
Hey everyone,
my friend and i went to brisbane forest park birding and herping last weekend and were very happy with what we found. First as we were walking along one of the bush walks my friend nealy stood on a red belly, but he isnt scared of snakes so all he wanted to do was take photos of...
Well it's still pretty chilly all over the place but with the few days of sunshine earlier this week we figured it was worth a bit of a poke around some places around Brisbane. Turned up a red belly in some woodland and a small eye cruising the road. Lucky!
Can't wait till things warm up...
Hi Guys and Gals, Had our big girl out in the sun for a while today and a teenage girl was walking past and asked was it ok to approach her, she was telling me that she wanted a young python as a pet but her mother was terrified of them, i told her to bring her mother around if she liked and she...

Hi everyone.
I did the course last Sunday down at Springfield Lakes.
It was a lot of fun and we learned a lot.
The first couple of hours was theory, identification etc, followed by a quick exam on that plus first aid.
We then got to practice using snake hooks on various live vens indoors.
After...
Hi all,
My Nana found this on her verandah at Coolum (Sunshine Coast, QLD) yesterday and send me a photo of it. Can someone let me know what this or what you think it is closest to?
Thanks,
Harley
I want to get venomous snakes I know I can't keep them straight away but what are the best and safest ways to do this. What are the paths I need to follow and what species do i need to keep to get to a class two reptile. I know that you have to have a few years experience in keeping other snakes...
Ven snakes should only be held by those who hold an appropriate licence or those who have been trained to do so. Apart from that, here's a new rb that I aquired. Very placid boy!!! Freehandling comments limited to those who keep or hold vens. thanks!!
Just found this on YouTube. Not sure if I would be game enough to free handle like this guy does but cool video nonetheless

Hi all, my name's Alicia, and I've been lurking here for a while.
I've decided to join properly for a couple of reasons -
1. I just bought a baby jungle off a Matthew13 fellow on here, and it is just the damn cutest thing ever.
2. I'm planning on building a sweet enclosure for it, so I'm...

Is it only me or are there far too many Aussie ven keepers being bitten lately and virtually bragging about it on facebook?
Comments like its only a red bellied black?
or even its only a baby death adder?
I wonder how many of those keepers have any idea of how serious any ven bite can be?
Obviously people feed rodents but what else do people feed their snakes. Iv heard of people feeding chicken necks, quails, pigeons and I even remember seeing photos of Paul feeding a jungle broccoli!
What else do people feed their snakes!
I would like to know everyone's experience with Mercury Vapour Bulbs.
I would especially love to hear from people who have Shinglebacks.
Some brands of MVB state that they are not recommended for Shinglebacks.
I'm getting two babies and although I'm an experienced herper I'm also going to be a...
Hi all
My sister in law lives in Penrith and is threatening to kill some snakes hanging around (already took out a rbbs against my protest) anyone live near there? How much does a call out cost?
She's seen a king brown under her house most recently
Thanks :)
Hey all saw this big black boy cross my path (exactly where by foot was going to be) yesterday in the daintree rainforest right by a creek. It was about a meter possibly bigger and about 5cm in diameter at the widest part, his scales where thick, and he looked up at me just after I noticed I was...
I know getting a first feed into a red belly isnt easy but I have tried everything but frogs! I cant get a hold of frogs (and I live in Northern QLD so unless I can get one posted it's down to catching and I cannot find any!
I have tried skinks and geckos and I even tried to force feed it a...
Hi everyone,
We live on acreage, in the hills in the Noosa Hinterland, QLD.
We have 2 dogs that we usually let roam in the garden area now that the weather has cooled down. Yesterday, as my hubby was playing with the dogs, he saw something close to the fire pit that looked like a snake. So he...

In light of a recent thread discussing a loss of passion with keeping reptiles, I figured it wouldn't be a bad idea to start another on why we do what we do.
Why do you enjoy keeping reptiles?
What particular animal, pair or genus keeps you interested?
What moments excite you most in general...

It was found inside a home with 4 young kids, the second one seen in two days. This one had been killed by the cat. Cat is strictly indoors so its def been inside the house. First one was 80-100, cm this one a bit smaller. It was found a few km inland from Byron bay. I'm leaning towards small...
Has anyone ever had weird herp dreams? I had one last night. Where I grew up there was a creek at the bottom of the street, (it ran under the road through a few measly concrete pipes), and when it rained heavily, the creek would flood and block the road. Anyway, in this dream there was a flood...
This little bugger would only eat fish for the first 5 mnths of his life, unless I helped him eat "meat"! Now, like most rbbs, he eats whatever is put in front of him!!!!!!;) He's 6mnths old, around 2odd FT.
So today I got my first elapid after searching for one of these for quite sometime I finally was offered one and am already wanting more hahah
well here's a couple of pics for you guys... Enjoy :)
