Umm Im pretty sure they grow to about 1.2 or 1.8 metres (although apparently it takes a very long time to reach max size) so that size tank will do for a few years atleast. Also I forgot to mention you should use a rock for the snake to anchor to as well as some sort of plant life such as java fern, This will give the snake something to hold onto while coming up for air or attacking prey etc.

Hi,
I am picking up 2 on Wednesday.
Basic set up is fresh water tank.
Basic furniture such as stick to coil around hide hole,an a water heater set with the desired temp.
And a water filter.
Feed on white bait or live feeder fish.

regards

Darin

i dont know much about keepn file snake but i remember my uncle had one. he reckoned that they were not much to look after.

Feeder fish are like guppies these can be placed in the tank for hatchlings to ambush.
I currently have a 5ft L x 2.5ft W X 20 inches H.

I have to run 2 x 300watt water heats with covers. to reach the desired temp.

One thing i picked up last night at the club meeting was a while back people lost a few from WHITE SPOT no know causes yet or treatment

People debated airration, current,UV,grave, water temps, water treatments and water pumps as some people had sucked them up.

Still alot not know, but we can only feed of other people experiences.

Methelyne blue will treat water for white spot and will help relieve toxic effects like ammonia and nitrate poisening.

Whitespot is a relatively common disease with fish. It could have quite possibly come from the feeder fish. If the aquarium that sells the guppies (or whatever feeders where used) and they had whitespot, then the chances of the file snake being affected are very high. There are medicines available to combat this, but I do not know how that would affect the file snake either....

Methelyne blue came up in the conversation last Night.
After speaking to taronga Zoo and getting the doesage rate one poor Herper lost his collection of Green tree frogs.

Yeah, pretty much any fish are all right. Don't know if they will take dead fish, I think they may have to be alive but that's about the only condition.

If anyone is after feeders I currently have for sale a breeding colony of Tropheus Moori Brabant for a mere 2.5 grand or if you think thats too much like caviar then I have Blue neon head colony for 500 or Yellow labs at 300 so take ya pick guys :)

i will take ten of each.

junglesrus how much you paying for two fileys and where abouts do you live, what are you keeping them in

I live in the St. george area of Sydney.
The tank is 5ft L x 2ft W x 20inches H around 470 litres.

I was advised yesterday not to run any substrate on the tank floor that is sharp or has edges as they do cutting themselves in which infection sets in quick.
Also to do weeky half tank water changes as priorly posted.

Ph levels to be kept around 6.5 to 7

And as stange as it sounds to me they are escape artists.

I Got My files yesterday

Well I picked them up yesterday.
Ended up getting 4 for $200 each captive breed.

So far the basic set up is drift would x 3 twisted branches,2 x 300 watt water heaters ,filter pump with not much current.

In 470 litre tank i am still adding what would be a total of 1 kilo of salt.

Have large lilis coming in friday and a few other plants.

The are awesome to watch.

Darin,
Any chance of taking a few pics of the tank set-up and snakes?
Also what is the kilo of salt for?

Seeing as how the African fella brought up the subject of fish (sort of). Does anyone want to buy any Bristle Nose Catfish? Got heaps of them at the moment. The breeding pair just keep having batch after batch of the little buggers.

Hi John,
the kilo of salt is to make the water Brackish.
i placed some feeder gold fish in last night, buy this morning they had eaten 6.

the 3 males are around 40cm and the 2 females around 60cm.

Regards

Darin

I buy them at Strickly Aquariums.
The have feeder gold fish at 15 for $10.
These fish are health they have blemishes such as not the right colour, or fins that have been bitten, just cosmedic things that they don't think the public will buy.

I find that easier than the cost of breeding or maintaining another aquarium.
