This guy just shed recently so I thought I'd get a few picks, seeings as he looks so damn good. However, my camera had other ideas and died almost right off. This is the best I could do with the few shots I had.

Cascabel (neo-tropical rattlesnake)

that is one mean looking mutha [EDITED BAD LANGUAGE - DON'T DO IT AGAIN!]. how big is it kev? ansd how is that other project u were excited coming along?

He's probably around 4ft, but he's fat as hell. They are really heavy bodied pitvipers. The scale texture is amazing too. They are most heavily keeled snake I have ever encountered.

The project I'm excited about is the amel retic project. I believe I posted pics of the male amel/type 2 albino I picked up. I'm going to be waiting for awhile for the CITES to clear.

That's a nice looking snake. Just don't get tagged!

:p

Thanks I'm rather fond of him. My venomous animals are my "pets". I have no breeding plans for them, I just enjoy keeping them. This guy is easily one of my favourites. I just love rattlesnakes and the C. durissus are excellent examples of the genus.

Lovely snake. There aren't many exotics I would like to keep, but some of the vipers are in my small list of things I'd like but will probably never have. *sigh* :)

Is that one's head unusually narrow? Is it venomoid? Or is that normal? Perhaps it's just the angle of the picture. I've seen very few neotropical rattlers and don't really know, but it looks a little bit strangely shaped to me.

Neo-tropical rattlesnakes do have smaller heads than most other Crotalus. But good call, as he is a venomoid, though he has suffered no deformities from the surgery. The vet that performed the procedure, was apparently quite good. Didn't even leave any scaring. For the record, I didn't have the surgery done, I purchased the snake this way. I also would have purchased the snake if it wasn't a venomoid. I have no problem working with fully "hot" snakes, and own a few. This guy was just to nice to pass up.

Can't have been too good a vet... he was mutilating poor snakes!

Glad to hear you aren't pro mutilation. Sounds like it was no more your fault than the snake's that it happened. I'd have purchased him too if legally given the chance! :) Lovely snake indeed.

Kev, have you ever been bitten by the rattler? Do you free handle it or do you treat it as you would a venomous snake?

I treat him like he's fully loaded. His teeth are friggin' huge! I have no desire to get bitten by him, venom or no venom. A friend of mine got some pics of his fangs a couple weekends ago. I'll harrass him for them.
