Today i bought a URS 100W ceramic heat emitter. I asked the pet store if it would work on my ON/OFF thermostat, and they said it would. But now its plugged in for 45 minutes and it is still not heating, and i called them and they said it would take an hour to heat up.. If it takes an hour to heat up how would it work going on and off all the time? Do they take that long to heat?

A on/off should only be used for heatmats and light bulbs NOT CHE.

need a dimming thermostat for them to get best results.

Now im really angry! I asked them if it would work in that thermostat and he said it would! I spent my last money for the week on that! Now im going to take it back tomorrow and complain..

Many salespeople find it 'culturally challenging' to say "no" or "I don't know". The problem is that they have to know about everything they sell, but you just have to know about what you want to buy, so you can research more deeply than they can. I spend much more time independently researching important purchases than I spend in the shop actually talking to salespeople and buying stuff. When I was working out how to set up my stimmie enclosure, I probably spent 15-20 hours researching (books and the web) and about 1 hour or so with the suppliers. And that was with the people at the suppliers being knowledgeable herps with whom I could test my ideas and listen to theirs!!! If I had been buying from a general (not herp specific) pet shop, it would have been 15 minutes of picking stuff off shelves and taking it to the checkout.

You could go and complain but i'd say it's a faulty or blown heat emitter, they take 15 mins at best to heat up. I use 30 of these with on/ off thermostats and have never had a problem, they can also last up to and beyond 5 years like this. Once they are hot they don't cool quickly when the thermostat clicks off. In fact i would go as far as to say they are more efficient than light bulbs like this.

Ceramics will work with on/off stats. When switched on it should start heating right away,in under a minute you should be able to feel the warmth if you put your hand on it.Sounds like you got a dud to me.

mate on the fitting of the light, where you screw it in, there will be a metal contact tab. make sure that it is contacting the top of the heat emitter, you might have to bend it down with a knife or something, make sure it is completely unplugged from the wall first thought.

also i use a ceramic heat emitter with the habistat pulse porportional thermostat. been going for longer then 6 months and not had any issues what so ever.

let me know how you go with the contact tab.

cheers

We just switched from a bulb to a ceramic and we are just using an on/off thermostat. It works a treat and heats up really quick and has reached maximum temp within ten minutes or so. They also retain the heat better, we were using a 75 watt heat light but now only need a 60 watt ceramic. I would say yours is faulty, when you turn it on you should feel heat straight away.

To test it put it into a desk lamp or similar without thermostat and just leave it on for an hour, if it's still cold then you've got a dud.

An hour to heat up is rubbish...

They work fine with on/off thermostats, they just may not last as long as with dimming or pulse thermostats.

Its either not making contact as said earlier or you have a dud lamp...;)

yup im converting my night lights [infrareds] to the ceramic heat emitter , sofar they are working out great with the on/off thermostats . as others have said within 10mins u can easy tell if its working or not .
i will be buying more for my future enclosures .

Herpshop says yes and says not to for CHE

Pardon my lack of intelligence but where does herp shop say no, here on their website it says yes (see dot point 7 below )?

Herp Shop Black Nite ceramic heat emitters enclose a reliable heat element in modern glossy ceramic material and are an ideal choice for light free heat for your herp:
  • The flat design radiates heat effectively without any light output.
  • Suitable for diurnal and nocturnal species.
  • They have a standard Edison Screw (ES) fitting.
  • The dark colour and stylish shape looks good in all enclosure designs.
  • Due to their low failure rate they are more economical than light globes.
  • Available in 60, 100, 150 and 250 watt outputs (all for the same low price).
  • Can be used with a thermostat.
  • Can be used with most dimmers.

Taking an hour for one to warm up is a ridiculously long time.
Most you can feel in the first 30 seconds, if that.

They can be used in conjunction with an on/off thermostat.

The only reason i listened to them is because i have went there so long and they have always been great. the socket it was put into had previously had bulbs that worked in it.

I use a on/off digital thermostat with my URS ceramic heater, no probs. I've used both 100 and 150watts. I'd say you've got a dud.

when i bought my ceramic it would not work in my light fitting, that previously had infra red bulb in it. then i was told about bending the inner contact tab out as it might not be touching. did you bend the tab out yet?

cheers
