Coastal enclosure measurements

im sure this has been asked before but i cant find it. what is a good sized enclosure for an adult coastal? im getting a hatchie but want to get it all set up at once (a click-clack) inside the big enclosure. is this a good idea?

4 x 2 x 2 is a good size for most adult carpets. my female will be geating a 110 x 110 x 45 (Lx H x W) and my male will be having a 4 x 2 x 2 ( H x L x W). i have heard of people putting them click clacks inside there big enclosures, not sure how they went so hopefully someone else can help you out there

the enclosure should be at least 50% in length of the adult python you are housing, so if they grow 3m, 1.5m would be the smallest you should have it in. The bigger the better

4 x 2 x 2 for an adult Coastal? A bit small imo. Mine will be 1.8M x .6 x .8 & I'm thinking even that might not be big enough for Cody as an an adult. I was told that the enclosure needs to be 2/3 the length of the snake. Can anyone confirm/ deny??

Generally the rule of thumb is 50% length long, 25% length width and 25% length height. So generally a 4x2x2 is a good all round size for coastals. For pythons such as diamonds which spend alot of time climbing height is prefer. However it is just that, a rule of thumb and it isn't the bible. It can be mixed up if you need to. Pythons can do just as well in a smaller enclosure providing all their needs can be met.

coastals grow to 3m+ so half is 1.5m. IMO 50% in length is the smallest you should house them in

Not all coastals get to three metres. Keep them in whats good at the time. I know 15 yr olds that are big but only 2.6m

IMO it would be better keep it in a click clack for up to a year and to have a heatmat and thermostat, not placing it in a larger enclosure. you only have 1/3 of the click clack heated, so it has a small temp zone to move in and out from, you can't do this in a larger enclosure.
This also give you a year to get the enclosure and also the size you want

I have an 8ft (2.4m) carpet in a 4x2x2 and he still does not look cramped at all. He has plenty of room for a good size hide box, large water bowl, open space to bask under his light, has branches to perch on. He looks quite content.

some of those "rules of thumb" are a bit outta wack in my opinion. 25% for height? for coastals, hight should be the largest of the dimensions considering they are aboreal.
for terrestrials this might apply to. for floor space for a terrestrial is good.

i have a 6-7 foot bredli in a 6footH x 4footW x 2footD enclosure and he uses every little bit of it, then still wants to come out,..
the bigger the better,...

most of my snakes go into 4x2x2 foot enclosures after a month or 2 in a click clack and have no trouble settling in,...

Of course they are, and they are only guidelines not rules. Always to to consider the guidelines to help you make a decision. My olives are only a few inches longer than my carpets but IMO look too big for a 4x2x2. They are going to cool soon but by spring they will have new, bigger enclosures to go into.

I thought Coastals were only partialy aboreal? And needed an enclosure that alows for some climbing but more length...

For my Jungle carpets (Not to different to the coastal's, yet a fair bit smaller), I have them in a 5ft High, 600mm Deep, 750mm Wide enclosures. Anything like that would be absolutely perfect for any full grown Carpet python, personally, I wouldn't like haveing my 3metre coastal in a 4ft, 2ft, 2ft enclosure. Too me that is way to small, seeing that all carpet pythons are Semi-aboreal.

So, if you can, try and get as much hight in the enclosure as you can.

Imo, full grown carpets should be kept in enclosures no smaller than 1400L x 600W x 800H... but every specimen has different needs.

just a query, but how many GTP are stumbled upon on the ground. And do your jungles spend more time perched or on the floor?
this is a question for anybody but, does any body have an elevated hide aswell as a floor hide? If you do, could you tell me which hide they would use more?

I keep my coastals in 4x4x2 enclosures. They also have both elevated and ground hides and dont use either lol prefer to sit on a branch behind some fake leaves

we went and had a look in the pet shop and im going to get a 6x2x2 custom built. what do you think? btw im gonna put a click-clack in it for when the snakes small.
