Hey guys. 5 weeks ago, we adopted a nearly 6 year old Jungle Carpet python. We believe the snake is female but don't know for sure. We weren't given much information on her history or temperament. We've left her alone to settle in but would love to be able to handle her. We're just not sure how to start. Being a jungle python we're worried she will bite us if we just go straight in and pick her up. Any advice or tips would be appreciated

Chances are she will have a crack at you regardless, unfortunately that’s just part of it. Confidence is key however. Hook out or a set of gloves if you’re worried about getting a nip to begin with, but usually once out even snappy jungles will tolerate handling. Just keep away from your face until you understand her body language and always stay confident in your movements. The nips don’t hurt that much at all honestly, it’s more the anticipation that gets ya!

I was very lucky and had a placid Jungle that was very chill.

Only ever struck me once in defence when I was shifting the thermostat probe back onto the heat mat while the Jungle was on it.

Apart from that one time i could always get mine out free hand no hook needed.

as stated by other members you need to be calm and move with intension give her room open up the door give a tickle with the jigger if she goes on the move that’s good grab the tail end past the cloaca there actual tail is quite delicate so try and get a hold of the last third of body if she doubles back just have the hook in between you and her
I don’t mean pinning her with the jigger just have it there so she can’t strike you
then the task of not getting bit and untangling her from the branches and enclosure furniture don’t pull on her better to let her go as she slithers through structure and then tail again
When she becomes untangled then you can hook the bitey end around the shoulders and lift her up with jigger grab the tail again and lift her out
a lot of the time they bluff and if they do bite my ones Cowley beach jungles don’t latch on just a sting not that bad just don’t try this if anything smells like food
they just don’t want to be messed with
The other option is to enjoy from afar and just don’t worry about all this handling stuff
In my opinion the animal especially jungles and alike don’t enjoy the ordeal only time I handle my jungles is when I move them or take them outside for some enrichment
At some feeding times with there face full of rat I have gave some touch stimulation Mabe for them to potentially associate being touched with an activity they potentially enjoy having a meal
not sure if it makes a difference but makes a mammal feel better
