Can any1 provide me with links about roach keeping/breeding? I personally absolutely hate them..But might be thinking about breeding them for the blueys. And does any1 else who now have roaches, did u ever seriously hate them? And how do get over that?

check out the links and caresheets page at http://www.herpshop.com.au.

I don't have a problem with the roaches. They are actually quite clean insects relativly speaking. I find them a lot less annoying than flies of mosquitos. If you are worried about escapees you may wish to invest in one of those cute little roach traps from the Herp Shop. These little devices are very effective at collecting AWOL SFR's.

I have a HUGE phobia of cockroaches, people don't understand when I have a huntsmen crawl down my shirt, I don't react at all, but if a cockroach is in the room, I stand on a chair and scream like a little girl lol. At my old house, there was a couple of cockroaches in the back room, and I was outside, scared, trying to catch a huge huntsmen spider with my hand and I put him in the house so he would stay in the house and hunt them. I'm too scared to even squash cockroaches.

Aaaanyway, the reason I'm scared of them I have worked out is because they are filthy disgusting disease carrying things. When I first started breeding woodies, I kept telling myself over and over, these weren't the same as bacteria carrying house cockroaches. Slowly, I became okay with it, although I still can't pick one up with my hands.

Keeping them is easy as, they seem to eat anything and we keep them in a huge tub with egg cartons stacked. We don't even need a lid, because we bought this paint on teflon stuff from the herp shop, and painted it thick around the lip of the tub, they can't crawl out for the life of them.

i've done basically the same thing... but i also use a lid so that other animals dont get in. i dont have a problem with roaches and my beardies just love them... but my mum and dad are another story.. both hated them but mum hated them with a passion!! but now she puts them in the feeding bowl with no problems... i think people just get over them in time... and necessity (having to feed your animals).. IMO its a worth wild thing to do.

UTS in Sydney used to use metallic tape around the inside of a garbage bin, with a 9 Volt battery connected to it by an alligator clip. Worked a treat.

This was before the teflon paint stuff.

LOl an electric fence for roaches! Nessesity certainly is the mother of invention!

Here's my 5 cents worth..
They do best if kept warm...On a heat mat and dark...Hence the need for the egg cartons etc...
You will have them breeding in no time...
If you don't like handling them a good thing I find is to put some paper towel rolls in the bottom for when you need to get them out-

Get a Chinese Container, Open one corner of it, pick up the paper towel roll and shake..
The roaches hide in the tubes and you don't have to touch them at all :)
Problem solved...

I feed mine on dry dog food and Gutload, with a piece of carrot for moisture...
Hope this helps :D

Lol Nomi you described how I feel about spiders  ;)

I used to not like the roaches cos the phobic side of me sees something dark with lotsa legs crawling on me and freaks out lol. I still don't like em if they're crawling up my arm or something but in my hands I can handle it. You get used to them after a while and now they're my "clean" lab roaches as opposed to the festy diseased household ones (kinda like ya lab mice vs house ones ). It can bring up visions of a horror movie the first time you lift up an egg carton and see 500 roaches scurrying about but ya learn to deal with it! ;)

Worst part is when you're at the 7 eleven and your boyfriend points out that there's a roach happily sitting on your shoulder that had walked down with you and the dog

No I haven't told him about you Greg CHILL 8)
