ok so im out of ideas and im out of mice. im trying to move my bredli onto rats and i have tried everything possible but she just is not interested. iv rubbed the rat on the mouse iv brained the mouse and she just does not want a bar of it, any other tricks out there you guys have?? anything would help

From what I've read, heat the snake up. It's also probably the wrong time of year to try and introduce new foods as well, with it cooling off a bit.

the snake is on constant heat she is only 3 months old so im not cooling her, althought the breeder was and she is slightly under condition so im trying to get her weight up a bit as she is so young and was a bit skinny when i got her

hey guys still looking for any ideas you may have as to how you integrated rats into yours snakes diet as i have tried most of the normal methods and will continue to try them just wondering if any other little tricks are out there, anything would help thanks :)

If she's eating mice, feed her mice. She's only 3 mths old, you still have plenty of time to get her onto rats.
Better a snake that eats mice than a snake that eats nothing because it has had a rat shoved in its face that it doesn't want to eat.

And further more, the breeder said she was slightly under condition, this could be from being a problem feeder.
So if she's eating mice, keep it at that till she's older.

its not the breeder that said she was under condition you could tell by looking at her and from the fact that he was cooling her and she had not eaten in a while. if she doesnt take the rat i do feed her a mouse im not gonna let her go without nothing, i have been told multiple times the soomer you get them on rats the easier the transition will be in most cases

ah I see.

How do you heat up your feeds for her?
Is there much of a size difference between the rats and mice you are offering?

Here are a few methods:

- heating up both rat and mouse in tap hot water
- try scenting with jap quail
- maybe poke a few holes in the rats stomach
- braining of the rat
- smearing mouse brains on the rat

Also have a read of Doc Rock's articles about feeding problem pythons in the Reptiles Australia mags.
(can't remember what issue it was....)

yer i tried all of those methods lol im using rats that are smaller than the mice as i figured it would be easier for her to take. i think ill try feeding a piknki mouse then try a pikni rat straight after to stimulate her feeding response as has been suggested to me.
i have been heating them up in hot tap water and she goes into huntimg mode but goes straight past the rat and looks for the mouse even though the rat had mouse brains all over it lol. ill keep trying then if not working feed a mouse as i just want her to put on some condition :)

In my opinion you are better to be feeding her with mice, if thats what she will take, my preference is to get them onto fur and bones asap, rather than worry about 'jelly' rats with no fur and only cartlidge, as has been said, leave her on mice until she picks up condition, then worry about the rats, not all will have problems switching, once the warmer weather gets here and she instictivly gets hungryer, then just store a rat in with the mice, so the mice pick up some scent, seemed to work for mine, or mine are just pigs and will eat anything offered ! ! !

ps, i've just read your feeding pinky mice ? i would have thought that to be way to small, try something a little bigger with fur, i have one that doesn't 'do' naked prey. and yes i tested it out, refused naked mouse, took an equal sized furry one,

haha yer she does not have the strongest feeding respones it took her a while to take the mouse i offered her last feed but she is alot brighter since that feed, ill keep giving mice for now thanks for the help guys

Feed her the mouse and when she is down to the rear legs, hold the head of the rat up to the bum of the mouse and she will eat over the legs of the mouse and onto the head of the rat. Do this several times and eventually she will start eating the rats on their own.

Just hold the rat with long tweezers up to the mouse and keep it nice and steady and dont make any movements until she has swallowed half the rat.

I'd be sticking with fuzzy mice for now. Mine are from the same breeder and they are both on fuzzy mice and have been fine and growing well.

thanks for that barramundi, and yer travisty im gonna keep up with the mice was just wondering if anyone with more experience had and tricks they used, she is going great was just told its probably better to go one rats as soon as possible but will all this i will keep up with mice for a while as she ate a weaner mouse in 15 minutes last feed :)
