And here I was thinking I had too much red, he he

flatten the bag u have them in down to a single layer, that plus no air = freezing rodent fun :)

Im lucky enough to have a vacuum sealer machine, which sucks out all the air and crushes the little mousies to death instantaneously before sealing the bag, i can then freeze for up to 12 months due to the airlessness..... it was cheaper than my first bottle of co2 and it is great for all my meats aswell.

To freeze my rodents, after i kill them i let their body temp cool to the ambient air temp or cool them in the fridge before freezing them. It prevents freezer burn.

I just do it out of habit from when I go hunting and bring game home.

cheers

Jonny

Hi Angel, where do you get your co2 from? I'd like to think about doing this in future. I don't get much pleasure smacking the rodents on the head, it's fast but unpleasant. And also, I'm in contortions trying to work out your avatar? I think I know what it is, but my twisted mind wont' stop!!! help LOL

is it true that your snkaes can get ill if you dont let the mice freeze for about 3 months? what about when you just smack them on the concrete?

people freeze them for a certain time, primarily to ensure parasites like worms etc are dead. if you use freshkilled mice/rats just be sure they are healthy and parasite free.wormed.

I'm no expert Regenold but, as far as I know the 3 month freezing kills some, or most of the harmful bacteria that are already in the rodent. I know someone who always feeds fresh and I don't believe has ever had a problem. I think (this is another question I need to find out some info on) if you worm the snake it stops most of any problems relating to the bacteria. (i'm guessing!) Isn't there some that reckon the nutritional value goes down with freezing anyway??

I'm not sure on that, but I would think that to be the case if freezing too long. Just a guess!

Regenold, if you have too many mice, smack them all on the concrete and then freeze them for a few months.
That way you know and have it under your own control.

moosenoose,
I usually take make snakes once a year to the vet for checkups, just in case.
The Vet will extract fresh poo and inspects it under the microscope.
