Hi All, My name is Dave, I’ve had two painted turtles for just over a year now, Slash and Pearl. They’ve been in a 3ft tank since this time and I’m planning on upgrading this to a 5ft tank when I’ve got enough money. About two months ago I noticed a little bit of fungus developing on Slash’s left foot so I starting treating him with Betadine. I couldn’t understand why he got it as I had checked the water for quality and it came up fine. I also do regular water changes and use a canister filter.
The following weekend I had to go away and when I came back I noticed his neck had also developed fungus and my flatmate had told me that he had seen Pearl biting him on the neck. I thought that she could have been trying to clean an infection that had come up as they’ve always got along really well, but I kept an eye on the tank. The next time when I put Slash in the tank for his daily feed I noticed Pearl bite him near the bum and an infection started to come up.
Since then, Slash has been kept separate from Pearl. He stays outside of the tank in a box with a heater underneath it and a UV light above it most of the day, he only goes in the tank for a few hours a day to feed which is when I put Pearl in the box. He gets treated with Betadine 3 times a day and goes outside for a walk about 3 times a week.
As you can see from the pics, the top layer of the infection has been peeling off. Underneath there is a white smooth layer. Can someone give me a suggestion as to what else I can use other than betadine or any other method that will get him healthy sooner. Slash has the coolest personality and I hate to see him like this, please help
