It's legal to catch them without a license and keep them as pets, I researched. But I bought him from a pet shop that was selling him as pet food. I couldn't let tha thappen. Money well spent.

Really? That's legal? Okay, great. I have 50 which I've just gone out and caught. They're for sale as reptile or cat food, $5 each (save geckoes! Half price!). How many would you like to save? I'll have more again next week...

If they are on the species list then you can't catch them wild and keep them.

Thats not quite true, you can purchase wild caught reptiles from WA.

Ultimately I would love to have that as a first gecko and get some experience with them, chances of me doing it are slim. I'm flying back.

Gillsy, I'd talk to the guys in DEC first. Certainly, if you catch them in Qld, the minimum they would want is Import/Export licenses.

:p

Hix

West Australia yes, East coast no.

But good to hear you are not going to try it.

You shouldn;t catch animals simply because you can and sell them to end up as pet food. If you even think of doing that, you don't deserve anything you have. I'm not saving any of your animals and stop expecting other people to do so. Joke or not, it's not something you SHOULD joke about. It's animal cruelty.

Horsy, he was joking.

You buy mice for your snakes, its the same thing. As long as they're killed humanely.

I was joking, the comatose people at the local hospital worked that out, most of the local cemetary residents probably weren't far off. You're the one who is funding animal cruelty (the pet shop has now said "Oh, great, this works well, let's do it again" rather than "Oh, that didn't work, we won't bother any more". I doubt it was legal for them to be selling live wild caught vermin; if it is, it shouldn't be.

I think the fact that I said "Joke or not" implies I caught on to your little ruse. And say what you like about my funding them because I gave them a mouthful AND reported them to the RSPCA who has since gone there and put a stop to it all so don't sit there and say I'm supporting their little trade. As I said before, it is legal to catch these geckos as they are considered a pest, given you don't take them outstate and spread them around. As for selling them for pet food in a pet shop, I don't know about that. All I know is I saw a Gecko in need and I helped him. Sue me.

You did fund them when you bought the gecko:rolleyes:

So. The RSPCA said I did the right thing and if I was ever searching for anymore "exotic" pets as they called them, to give them a ring as they do get them, especially around christmas. They think it was right and so do I, you're little hestitations don't matter to me. Instead of being killed, he is living life happily. I think it's evident he appreciates what he has seeing as he returned to his enclosure.

Thats funny considering exotics are illegal for the majority of herp keepers

I'm going up to qld in a couple of weeks, and i'm staying with my partners relatives.

I might try and catch a couple to bring back, the other thing is we need a license for them here.

I wonder how that would go.

Grab some Cane toads while your at it.

So your saying that exotic pests can be legally kept in QLD on licence? or don't you need a licence to keep them?

These arne't illegal. I rang up the QLD Licence place to double check it was fine. You can keep them without a license, it's just not recommended and you don't want to be breeding them or rereleasing them outerstate.
