Are any type of grasshoppers poisonous?Cause im gunna feed some to the beardy that i get. Thanks

I had beardies years ago, I used to run a net through long grass and then feed any & all hoppers to my dragons. never had a problem with anything.

Had a Jacky Dragon try a tiger moth once, he spat it out with a look of absolute discust. Needless to say that he never tried that again. It was funny

There's no point being poisonous unless you advertise it, so most poisonous insects are very brightly coloured, for example red. The idea is that predators will know not to eat you in the first place, not simply die afterwards.

There certainly are highly poisonous species, but just about anything you're likely to find around Sydney should be fine.

As Jenny suggested, don't use any species which are bright red etc. The highly poisonous species include some of the most beautiful species, they often have very vivid colours on black backgrounds.

The most beautiful grasshoppers of all are the Warramaba spp. (no, I'm not biased :p ) I'd lie about them being poisonous if there was any chance of you finding them and using them as lizard feed ;)

I'll resist the tempation to stick up more Warramaba pictures ;)

Yes.

Doesn't sound at all like a grasshopper, but sounds like an interesting insect. If there was a grasshopper deep inside a piece of wood and living with its babies, I would be extremely keen to see it!

i was told it may have been a wood cricket,,very strong jaws,,a strong looking animal in gereral, like a mole cricket in coloration an build but bigger, but u could tell straight away it was a cricket..beardy would have loved it.lol

Sounds interesting, I'd love to know what it was you saw.

Sorry we hijacked your thread, olive!
