Gtp help ASAP please

I meant if he fed it tonight... I thought his friend had fed him last Sun. and then again tonight! I thought he did since the bump was so high in the snake... My bad, must have read it wrong...

It's OK. In my post (which you responded to) I was asking for clarification on when it was actually last fed, and still haven't gotten it. I think Toby has other things to worry about other than concentrating on APS, and rightfully so.

sorry guys, last feed was last sunday, small chicken. when i got to her she was hanging from the fork of a branch ( by the swollen area) with not enough strength to pull herself up. In turn she was limp on the floor with her tail end. thats what the first photo was of.
i then took her and put her in a tub with a branch and had a look at her. she is still responsive and can move her head end quite freely, although slowish she still had strength to stretch out to my hand. however from the swollen area back she has barley enough strength to wrap hr tail around my finger and when she did it got looser and looser until she slipped down and off.

I have little knowledge of GTP's and little knowledge about sick pythons as ive only kept them for a year and a half but its almost like maybe the swollen are is pushing against the spine and restricting movement? not sure just a thought.

has anyone ever seen anything like this??

Chicken? Is that the usual feed? Any defication (crap) since last feed?

I might stay out of this...it does seem concerning though. I'm sure someone on here can shed light on the matter

@cools, i cannot tell as there is a pair living in a very large viv. Im unsure of what gtps eat normally but thats what the dinner was.

Maybe start by talking to the owner. They should know the habits and history of this particular GTP. I expect you will get one mighty large crap in the near future.A warm bath and physical movement may help to stimulate the bowels.

Looks like the snake has attempted to regurgitate the chicken and hasnt been able to, contact the owner and get it to a vet as soon as possible.

Knowing nothing about GTP's, do they normally eat chickens? I'm only experienced in carpets, BHP's and monitors... Sorry if I'm steering this thread off course.... Hope the poor fella comes through this ok...

That snake has very serious internal problems of some sort, either related to the feed, or maybe not. Spinal damage is a distinct possibility, from the look of the animal and your description of its behaviour. To an experienced reptile vet ASAP is your only recourse at this stage, and without wanting to sound too negative, I'd prepare myself foe some bad news if I was you...

Hopefully not though.

As far as I'm aware gtps are a on the specialist permit in S.A. I find it hard to believe that someone with a $1000+++ animal would leave it in the hands of someone who seems to not know much about the proper care of the animal. For the sake of the animal I would say you have no choice but to get it to a vet asap. Glenside veterinary clinic have been helpful with my reptile related health issues.

+1 on the vet. GTP's like many other snakes can eat chicks and chickens.(of appropriate size) I agree with pythoninfinite the food item may have been to large? And it could be pushing up against the spinal cord. We have all seen gravid female GTP's that are draped over there perch uncomfortable as hell. This snake looks similar.

It had to be well enough to eat the chick one week ago, from the appearance in the pics it looks as if the chicks legs have lodged during reverse perastalsis.
When a snake eats the chicken head first the legs straighten and go down alright but if the food begins to rot and is thrown back up partially digested the legs and beak can lodge.

looks alot like my coastal that passed from a tumor, she had no signs and within 2 days a massive lump appeared about 2/3rds down her neck. only way to check is to get it to a reptile vet, they will ultrasound or biopsy the lump. i recomend mark hill at somerton park too, any other reptile vets in SA google can tell you more than they know

Btw, chicks should be starved before feeding them to snakes, if they have any grain in the crop, it will ferment (inside the snake) and cause problems - severe diarrhea usually follows, or worse.
See a vet asp.

Cheers guys, the owner I in Madagascar and I'm waiting to get in contact with him. I don't know the person who is feeding and cleaning but I know the owner. I'm going to get her to the vet this arvo. It's a hard situation cause he looks after his gtps very well from what I have seen he will be devo if it dies while he is gone.

Is this the same for quail regarding grain ?
