Hi all

Massive surprise this afternoon, my pair of "female" bluetongues are now mum and dad...Got home this arvo and there are 5 babies (one dead), so obviously one is NOT a girl as i thought. Couple of questions, I would really appreciate help as i never intended them to breed (hence i purchased what i thought were 2 females).

1. Do i need to separate the babies from the adults, the adult i'm assuming is the mother is very agitated at the moment, i dont want her to hurt any of them
2. The 2 adults are from the same clutch so do you think the babies are going to have health problems? THey all look alright, good size, moving well and healthy looking but given the parentage should i take them to the vet for a check up?
3. To prevent this happenning again am i going to have to separate my 2 adults (Cookie and Bickie), or can i prevent future breeding by temperature (ie not let them cool over winter, that sort of thing?) I havent heard of anyone desexing lizards before...I love my 2 and i dont want to have to get rid of one, but i dont want them breeding again. Also love the little babies for that matter, was just such a surprise!

Any constructive advice would be very much appreciated. the person i bought them from said they were both female, but i guess you can never be sure when they're young (i've had them since they were about 12-14 wks old).

Please help!
thanks
Alison

You will have to separate the babies ASAP. The parents will sometimes eat them. As far as i know there is no way of preventing them from breeding if they are kept together.
