If it was already pre-installed they often create a partition on the hard drive and have the software on a separate drive.

which amnufacturer does that?

i usually do that and was annoyed to find my new sony lappy wasn't partitioned :(

With all the bit torrent programs you have on, it's only a matter of time before you have problems again as well.

A lot do it and I'm really annoyed that they don't give us the disks!! lol, they only seem to create a small partition to put backup info on instead of giving us the disks.

Most laptops will tell you to build a boot disk before using the computer. Its as good as having the OS disk itself.

ctrl+alt+delete is an awesome comic... reading it did help me feel better.

all sorted now...
went into recovery mode and reset to facory condition... or some such... used the HP recovery partition with all the initial software... virus is gone.
bought a decent spy/malware scanner/blocker
put adblockplus back on firefox (that program is a god send, cant believe i forgot it before)
and ditched windows firewall for a decent one

so hopefully will be all good now!

forget smitfraud, use combofix, its a more indepth scan and does the trick everytime!

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php

favourite that link, it updates reguarly.
run it once every few weeks

also i reccomend to download a spyware blocker if you dont already

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html

spyware blaster is what i use, its a great free version, but make sure u open it to update reguarly, as auto updates are only available with a registered version.

another scan that should be run reguarly is activescan from panda scan, its an online scan that has found viruses for me that no other AV could ;)

http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/solutions/activescan/

u might have to disable your AV for the scan as some will intefere.

and finally, 'ATF cleaner' clears caches (importantly, java cache) and cookies as well as temp files and folders etc.
im not sure if it runs on vista but i would say so, u can

im the nerd u come to when u need help austy :p
i always knew u had a thing for intelligent girls, better than the dropdead gorgeous ones who dont know how to spell their name correctly hey ;)
