Sorry for the rant, but Windows Vista is the techie equivalent of an exotic hybrid infested with mites being sold at a pet shop with poor hygiene practices :)

thats great!

and i asked for rants....

xp never asks me for updates...
not actually owning it, thats turned off....

i have vista. everything looks better... nice and pretty... yay... but its rubbish! stick with xp! unless you like freecell. the freecell game with vista is awesome.lol

*looks better* is a matter of opinion ;) I like windows looking plain and drab hehe
having pretty stuff slows things down, yuck!

I have had vista for the last week, can't tell a huge difference to tell you the truth, but havnt loaded much of the extras on yet to find the hidden problems.

I got it, have found work-arounds for most compatibility issues... All good so far

What a pain. I hope you were able to resolve your virus problem.

Have you considered switching to Linux?

I've installed Vista on 4 PCs at home (2x64-bit and 2x32-bit) and have had very few issues to be honest. No problems with software compatability (this would be different if we had niche requirements, but we don't) and only 2 hardware issues, the first being that there is no 64-bit driver for a fingerprint reader on a keyboard (which we don't use anyway) and the other is because my X-Fi sound card isn't compatible on 64-bit using more than 4GB of RAM (which should be fixed by the end of the month).

just bought a sht-hot new system and figured i might as well go with vista - haven't used it a lot as yet, still using my old v slow laptop because i haven't got MSoffice yet and can't function without it as i work from home.

all good so far - i loaded acrobat 6 pro on there and it said there were 'known compatibility issues ' or something but just ignored it and it seemed to install ok, plus i could open files without probs.

time will tell i guess - anything is better than this heap of junk

Try openoffice.org - it's a free package and it has the same programs as and similar interface to Microsoft Office.

cheers nickamon but i've got office on it's way to me in the post, i paid $200+ for an empty box and a registration code which i bought from this system builder outlet place, then i had to ring microsoft and get the cd's sent to me

roundabout way of doing it, i know :)

Wow, another open source advocate :)

I open source has some way to go before it establishes a market share in the home PC environment. In many cases there is a level of tweaking required for effective operation and a complex installation procedure. This is suited to a corporate or data centre environment but falls short of the home environment.

The main exception to this is Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird.

Oh, bummer. I hope you get your CDs soon. :)

Call it a love of programs that aren't from Microsoft? ;)
