So yesterday in my endeavour to learn how to sex my pythons I took my two adult rough scale pythons to Peter Wilson at Currumbin Valley Reptile Vet. Thank god he didnt want to just show me how to sex them but gave them an overall checkup as well. The good news is I do have a male and a female the bad news is they both had a parasite called trichomonis which he didnt seem to think was to big a deal and gave them a dose of Flagyl each and told me to come back in two weeks for another dose. My concern is and i know ill probably cop it for this, that i have had them in the same room as my other 4 pythons and while i am careful with regards to using f10 between snakes im worried the other 4 might have to. The cost went from quoted $95 to $240 (which also got me some vetafarm soluvet which he recommended i put in there water once a week as a supplement) and now He is recommending i take all my snakes to him to check if they have it. Im worried its going to get quite expensive :S.

what are peoples opinions in treating them myself i would need to get some flagyl (not sure where from or how hard that will be and probably a microscope just to check if they do in fact have it(he showed me what to look for under his)

i dont mind taking them all to him but if people have come across this before and thinks its an unneccesary excercise that i can do myself i would also be happier to do this.

Ask if he can give you enough flagyl to treat what you have, it certainly wont do them any harm. Obviously if you have a microscope you can do fresh faecal sample checks easy yourself. Flagyl is prescription though so you will need to get it from a vet. If you havnt had snakes int he same enclosures and your not feeding uneaten food items to other snakes i doubt it will spread, although as you just found out a lot of snakes have them anyway and it isnt a problem until they become stressed or the burden to high

In humans trichomonas is sexually acquired. I'm guessing it's a different species though. No idea of it's significance in reptiles.
Best ask the vet, but don't freak out.
Before you decide whether or not to treat the other reptiles ask from which part of the animal it was isolated & how it's spread.
