Just asking as I saw a 10ft Queensland Carpet Python today(where I delivered some rats), and it was just like a wardrobe with glass doors on it!!! The doors weren't even locked??? Just wondering?? Cheers Cheryl

Firstly i dont think wardrobes work well due to the height. It makes it harder to create a thermal gradient. For the larger pythons my cages are 1.4m long,65cm wide and 50cm high.

Thats too small for a 10ft carpet! As a general rule I try to make sure all of my enclosures are at least the lengh of the snake housed in them! I would be keeping a 10ft carpet in a large outdoor avairy!

Serpentongue if you look in my gallery you will see I have converted and old cupboard into and enclosure. I have three banks of three lights for each section run by a timers and thermostat as well as extraction fans. I have no problems controlling the temp at all and in fact it allows for greater temp varients and allows the snakes to move between the different heights until it is comfortable. I have locks on my doors though.

Well, this wardrobe only had a little fluro tube in it. Not a UV light. Didn't look all that clean either. this guy, has been feeding it Guinea Pigs, Pigeons(feral) off one of the local river bridges, etc etc. First time he's ever bought any rats off us. Wanted live ones, but I said, we don't do live rats re the damage they can do to snakes etc, etc. Yarp, Yarp. I was quoting what I've learnt off this great site! Cheers Cheryl.

Its debatable if the animal needs UV but hope the light was caged. Strictly speaking, the cage size is OK, exspecially if the animal has trips outside, the minimum width should be half the snakes length . Serpenttongue is 100% right about the thermal gradient, I've got 120cm by 120 cm cages and during winter they are awful to heat right. Also height is a waste of space unless there are heaps of branches to climb on.

I've got a coastal in a converted wardrobe and find no problem at all with heating it. Just have a couple of ceramics on a stat, a fluoro which is just so's I can see in. I do have a lemon tree in there and the gradient is vertical but Mustang just loves it. Almost as much as he loves Zoe :)

Pidgeons a no no as they're feral but guinea pigs OK as long as clean and purpose bred though even then not as a permanent diet in my opinion.

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: How big should an enclosure be for a 10f

Well, this guy has been a Druggie for the 30yrs I've known him. He even looks like a very skinny Rat! LOL!

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: How big should an enclosure be for a 10f

No way would I feed a filthy pigeon to one of my snakes.

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: How big should an enclosure be for a 10f

knocked it right on the head there greebs old buddy.

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: How big should an enclosure be for a 10f

Afro, I have seen your coastal in the wardrobe and he really loved me. Wanted to give me a big kiss - twice - I thought he would even break the glass to do so. lol :)

Also, I have read that a decent length enclosure for a large python is half the length of the snake being housed in it. e.g. 10 ft snake should have an enclosure that is at least 5 ft long.

What is everyone elses view on this???

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: How big should an enclosure be for a 10f

Yeah Greebo! this guy says he kills the pigeons, then cuts of the wings and tail feathers, so the 10footer can swallow them??He's had this Qld Carpet Python for 10yrs, so maybe he knows what it likes to eat?? I dunno? I'm very dubious about the whole deal, especially when he asked for live rats? Which I wouldn't sell to him. Sounded a bit p...ed off to me cos I wouldn't do it? Dave n I don't sell anything live at all. Cheers Cheryl

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: How big should an enclosure be for a 10f

Feeding wild animals to snakes always increases the risk of parasites or poisoning. Each piegon may has just a little pestacide in it but if it can accumulate over a long time then...
