Sounds like a very odd question but I'd like to hear about how you accurately measure your critters? I tried with a piece of string down my Darwins' back last night but he was too interested in wriggling around.

Just thought some of you guys have been more successful using other methods?

Thanks :)

I wait until they shed and measure that :)
that method will always give you a way bigger length , its because they stretch as it comes off also notice all the little gaps between the scales on the shed skin , that also makes it a hell of alot longer than what your actual snake is :)

ive just been using serpwidget , works well for me but if you didnt want to use that then trying to get them to straighten along a wall will help

sometimes if you give them a straight ledge they will go along it, it has worked for me

I stick my crew along a wall where the only thing to "grasp" is the wall. Then measure when they stretch out or the approximate number of tiles they covered. Usually works.

A simple peice of string...

Than once you've measured the snake, lay the string down beside a normal measuring tape

Yep, this is the method I was trying to use, too wriggly though lol.

Thanks for all of the replies, I think I'll use serpwidget. Looks alright :)

I didn't realize.. Stupid of me I know ha.. I've just used serpwidgets and it works out her shed is an inch larger then what serpwidget says.

that thing never works on my computer :( it downloads but when i open it all i get is a bunch of gibberish(i have an apple and ive heard it was never formatted for them ? ) , thats why i use that serpwidget site

Serpwidgets - Snake Measurer

Yeah I wouldnt worry too much, they are basically the same program, just HM has a couple of extra features.

no worries its a pretty common thing for people to do , on the serpwidget thing though your either using serpwidget wrong somehow or you haven't been completely stretching the skin out in the first place , id say its more likely the first though as serpwidget is subject to user error are the photos being taken from directly above the snake ? if the ruler is in the background of the photo in someway it will throw out the measurement as its only a 2d image and the computer cant tell that the ruler is further back making it appear smaller than it is compared to the snake , likewise if its in the foreground

Oh I know its probably wrong haha I didn't intentionally go grab a picture with a ruler etc I just wanted to try out the site (which is much better then using string haha) I won't take the measurement it came up with as gospel!

Clearly not a very suitable picture to get an accurate measurement but yeah I was just trying it out is all :)

I'll get my mac to slide along a straight wall then put markers at both ends when she straightens out.

I measure all different species all the time from pythons to elapids
And the best technique I've found is tubing the first 1/3 of the snake as that's the part
the snake doesn't want to straighten and then you hold it out against a tape, best with two people, I measure all the snakes I catch this way

i let the head go around a corner and they normaly keep going round the wall then they go straight 8)
