Do you have a photo of it’s head, going by the body type I’ll say it’s dangerous, most likely a Brown snake (venomous)

No. It was in that position for the short time I observed it.
All the snakes found in Melbourne are venomous, so that's definitely a venomous one.

Thanks. I figured there was a decent chance it was venomous. I've seen a few snaked over the years here by footpaths, this is the first brown/reddish one I've seen.

It's a Lowlands Copperhead, Austrelaps superbus.

Based on a drop for drop basis tested on laboratory mice, they're very dangerous, but bites to humans aren't so bad (there aren't any reliably recorded human fatalities and bites aren't usually particularly serious), and they're not prone to biting people. They also have short fangs unlikely to penetrate jeans or sturdy trousers.

Beautiful snakes typically with relaxed character. In my younger, more stupid days, I used to go out catching and freehandling these critters and was never given a bite for my stupidity.

Having said that, you definitely don't want to get bitten by one, and if you ever do you should treat it as potentially serious.

Yeah, I always assume that all snakes are dangerous. Only reason I was curios about this one specifically is because its the first time I've seen a brightly coloured one here. Its black snakes I and my friends usually see around here.

Were not too worried about getting bitten even though they can get close, it more making sure we don't get startled by them to which they might get their own startled response.
