are they a form of coloubrid? (just guessing from the scientific name)

No these are aquatic elapid snakes and should be regarded as dangerously venomous....

great pics. i saw one when snorkeling at mosquito island, just off phi phi island, followed it for about 20 minutes. great to watch. looking behind every nook and cranny for something to eat. it was probably the best part of the holiday lol
