Hi all,
My carpet python is in the beginning stages of its shedding process but I've also noticed that it has mites. What do I do? She's abit temperamental coz she's shedding. I'd appreciate some helpful tips. Thanks

Jeff

im interested in this for future reference i have heard a luke warm bath and then plain old betadine is this correct???

There is heaps of information on treating mites on this site and on the web. Betadine is an antiseptic, not an insecticide.

Buy the product top of descent, you can order it through herpshop or some petshops stock it. its a can of spray, need to do it once a week for 4 weeks so you make sure you kill the mite eggs that have been laid, have heard they go through your house. Doubt thats true, but good luck

Top of Decent is awesome and worked really well for me - I was given a costal that I didn't quarantine long enough...

I always removed the animals prior to spraying TOD. All cage furniture was removed, substrate destroyed. I sprayed all around the enclosure, making sure to get into crevices. Make sure the enclosure is all foggy with the spray, wait 15mins and put your animal back in. No water in the enclosure for at least two days and no food for seven. I just had newspaper in the enclosure until all mites were gone.

TOD was repeated again seven days after and newspaper substrate replaced.
Enclosure furniture was either put in the freezer for at least 5 days and I put all my wood furnishings into my swimming pool for about a week!!!

My reptile vet recommended "Frontera spray". I sprayed a little frontera on paper towel and wiped it over of my snakes (not their heads) and it killed the mites on contact. I then used a damp tea towel to wipe any excess spray back off my snakes. Obviously, this spray is for fleas and ticks on dogs and cats and should be used with caution and I suppose it's a personal decision if you decide to use it. I can report all mites were gone within the week and there were no side effects from the spray noticed. I did do re-treatment again. I have never had mites since. This was over a year ago now.

Good Luck - Persistance pays when dealing with these little critters :)
