The male bredli has been in his water bowl all night and this morning, He finally came out and theres all these black things in the water bowl, my mum squashed one and all blood came out, it kind of looks like a tick or a flea basically but smaller, there's a fair few on his belly.. I've made a vet appointment for 3:30, earliest I can get in. Will try and find some T.O.D to buy.. I hope it doesn't go into the females and the dragons enclosure.. the female has none on her at the moment..

Sounds like mites.... they will get to other enclosures if not treated asap, best tub the snake for a while, treat it and the enclosure, including removal of all substrates, before returning it. Don't be suprised if they turn up again in six months time...only takes 1 to be missed..

Should I move the male to another room now?

Ok, I moved the male to the otherside of the house... What can I do to prevent them getting to the dragon and female bredli while I wait?

mmm, probably too late. I'd get it into a clean tub, treat it and the enclosure for several weeks, I'd also treat other snakes you have and start paying very close attention to them, look for swollen eyes, raised scales, snakes in water bowls ect. Have you had any new animals come in of late? can you work out where the mites have come from?

The male bredli was last snake, he came in two weeks ago. He has raised scales and you can see black under the scales.. I thought he was just in the water for shedding.. I can't see anyplace that they can come from.. I can't see any black things on his substrate or anything.. I normally clean there enclosures every 3days even if they haven't soiled the paper...

If your serious about getting rid of them, you may need to treat every animal, and the whole room they are in. Thats why some people are paranoid about getting them, that and the fact that they can possibly spead various diseases.

I will try and treat them all.. I hope the male doesn't have any diseases :| I really don't know how it happened... there not in poor living conditions or anything..

Two weeks.. you may be lucky and they havn't spead outside the enclosure yet...maybe.....

I hope so... I can't find any in the females enclosure.. I really can't believe this is happening.. a few days ago it was about them falling off there hides :?

Not your fault, it would have had them when you got it, just quarantine it for a few months untill your sure it's clean, and cross your fingers. Are you using newspaper substrate in all your enclosures? If your using cat litter or bark chips you will never rid them as they love that stuff.

Both bredli are on paper towels, and the dragon is on tiles for half and towels for half aswell.. Should I throw away all there lightbox hides etc.

Looking for them is very hard, you usually only see them when the snake has thousands on it, and it only takes one to get through the treatment to restart the infestation.

I might put each in a spare room and just fully spray the room?

No need to throw anything out, just treat them all thoroughly with TOD, then retreat a couple more times over the next month.

Could be wrong, but I think Jason was meaning if you've recently acquired a snake, the mites probably came with it. Unless any of your other animals had them, but given that only your bredl that you've had for 2 weeks has the mites, then I'd say it's likely the mites came with the bredl.

oh ok.. will they be to small to use tod with though?

what a bumma Dave,....good luck with getting rid of them!

do the actual snakes get sprayed with TOD too? i kinda remember reading not to spray the snakes, (as in remove them from the enclosures) but to spray a cloth and wipe the snake down with it,..?

this is NOT from personal experience,..just what i've (well i think) read,....
