My (hopeful) new carpet

Soooooo…..

I’ve just joined. I was offered a swap for my Kenyan sand boa for a jagXjungle …. However. Upon researching the jags and the neuro issues I decided I couldn’t go through with it. Hopefully the wee fella gets a good home but I think the thought of having a snek that could start banging it’s head and corkscrewing just doesn’t sit with me, I’d rather a healthy pet than a pretty one….

After all the research I’ve done I have firmly decided a carpet is the snake I want as my first big one, they seem to be rare here in uk, I contacted pet stores and breeders and there was nothing. So (I believe in fate) I have picked up what I believe to be an adult male as it’s 4 ft. Maybe a young female (time will tell) from my local animal shelter.

So please meet “Milkshnake” I’m pretty sure it’s a jungle carpet although any input would be appreciated if I’m incorrect.

can’t wait to get him. I’ve passed all the tests so far. Had to fill out a form that was pretty extensive to assess my knowledge of the breed then get my landlords permission etc. I’ve now uploaded my video of his Vivarium and I’m confident it will meet the requirements. It’s certainly better than the one he’s in just now going by the two photos on the website, however in my mind it’s the basics of what he need to be happy. I will improve on it with a few eBay purchases, I do however intend to turn a 5x3x3.5 old skool box tv entertainment cabinet into a bioactive but the viv I have just now will suffice.

definitely not a jungle -

Its most likely a x between a few different carpet species (I would say MD x Coastal, but its anyones guess) only the breeder would know.

Cool. How can you tell out of interest? Obvs im learning so all and any info/education be sppreciated. Obvs the markings are the main telltale but i have saw jungles in the darker patterns, all be it on google images but then thats probably wrong. What do I look for to ID? Cheers

edit… I see the differences now, Most junles be bright and its a banded pattern, even in the darker colours wheras mines is circular markings same as coastals… So yeah a coastal for sure sure. Whats an MD? And what makes you think its a cross? Again i want to learn! Cheers

Beautiful snake, how old is Milkshnake?

The shelter didnt know. Theyve had it since october 2021… its meant to be just over 4 feet the now so its either a fully grown male or a still growing female (I think based on my cursory knowledge)…. If it doesnt grow any more then itll be harder to estimate an age. If it grows then we can assume its about 18-24 months old just now??

the shelter only had weight and feeding records. No lengths were recorded so its hard to say if its grown any since theyve had it. The listing said over feet but i think it may be pushing 5 now. Its about to shed so ill measure that once its off to get an idea.

As Herpetology says , it is a cross between maybe a coastal and a Murray Darling or possibly an inland (imbricata). The problem with snakes in your country is there is no proof of origin or locality

Yeah cheers for the info. I mean tbh once it’s used to me I should be able to measure it. yeah I’ve had a look at photos since reading that reply and I can see the similarities. Tbh I’m not overly fussed what it is, It’s a wee mutt and it’s healthy and inquisitive so it’s all good. And yeah there wasn’t many carpets about online when I searched. its currently exploring it’s viv and I’m just sitting here watching it. Seems happy enough so far

Yeah defo… I’m for changing the name once sexed. Boris for a boy and Priti for a girl, after 2 of our politicians (one our soon to be ex PM) who are a pair of snakes (sorry for the insult snakes of the world)

Can anyone chime in with a healthy weight for this size of snek please? The Shelter said it was quite underweight when they got it. Its last weigh shows a 250g gain. That was a couple of months back. I. Going to get it onto Rats and feed every 10-14 days I think just until it fattens a bit as it still looks a tad under at the moment

So a second (or 3rd,4th and 5th) opinion would be appreciated.
