Screen shot 2011-10-19 at 11.44.47 PM.pngI was sitting on my balcony today watching the world go by, and it was a beautiful sunny day so i put my little bredli on the fence for a sun bake whilst i enjoyed some music and some ciggies. many pedestrians were walking past on the footpath (my street is a main street of town) and nobody had ev noticed.
he was there for at least 20 minutes before i decided to grab him and head back inside. as i was getting him off the fence, and old man walked past and was like holy crap what is that! and then i was like oh hes my snake and after a few seconds of shock he was absolutely fascinated, and asked if he could touch him as long as i kept Happy's head away. he touched him and was amazed, as most people are, with how he felt.
i then went on to talk to this man for a long time, and found out that he was from new zealand and has never been up close to a snake before now. he said he had only seen wild snakes and got no where near them, and never touched them.
after a while of watching my little fellow on the fence, he told me that he was now aware that snakes are harmless and not out to hurt people, before that he always thought that all snakes should be killed as they will harm you, that is what he was told when he came over from new zealand.
i felt good about myself that i had educated at least one person that snakes are not bad and should be just left alone if you come across them in the wild. he told me he would never harm a snake, just after meeting my little fellow and realising they are not bad at all.
i love being a snake owner :)

That's a lovely story =) I enjoy doing that too, especially with people who have a phobia of snakes. First they just want to be able to touch it and as soon as they can touch it, they can hold it and then come to enjoy, admire and respect it. Quick note, I never force people to hold snakes!

Also, you're Bredli is absolutely gorgeous, probably one of the nicest I've personally come across. Who'd you get him off? I'm not huge on Bredli, but I'd jump at the chance to own something like your one, amazing colour and pattern!

Can you remember the guy's name by any chance?

It is great that you and your snake changed someone's thoughts on snakes :)
I have gotten a couple of my female friends to touch my snake and they were really amazed at how she felt (she's a caramel childrens and seems to feel smoother than my other snakes for some reason).

Great story. I go every year to school near us on "schools winter carnival" with few of my boas and ratsnakes. It´s really nice to see childrens eyes when they touch a snake first time ... and adults too. Few hours goes like a seconds when you talk abt snakes to people who have just realized that most of snakes are harmless and really beautiful. My main tough to them is: respect all snakes but don´t be afraid of them - and don´t kill them ... As you know we have here in Finland only one ven snake - Vipera berus. Very hated snake because most of people don´t know anything abt snakes.

I so love it when people come over to our side :)

Keep up the good work

I can confess - I was once that New Zealander (perhaps not as old). But before I moved to Cairns I didn't know whether I needed to take a whacking stick with me everywhere I went in case I was ambushed by a slither of taipans.

Though, I also admit one of the first things I did was go to the zoo and straight to the snake show! That's where I fell in love!

I had my Jungle out one sunny afternoon after work about 3 weeks ago and I heard the doorbell so I quickly handed him off to my partner who was outside with me and went out the side gate to greet the lady that had come door knocking for the Cancer Council.

I said I'd be glad to make a donation and I'd be back in a sec, I just needed to grab some money. While she was waiting she spotted my partner and Moose and actually gasped with utter glee - She'd never held or touched a snake but had always been fascinated by them (she is originally from the UK)

So for the next 20 minutes she held Moose (who I have NEVER seen so relaxed and intrigued with a new person, he normally gets "zoomy" but he was totally content with her) and then the Bredli came out to say hello - the weird thing was, both snakes went straight for her face to have a look and sniff - which was strange as they don't usually do that!

Must have sensed that she was to happy and calm... Who knows, but it was interesting to watch. She kept saying how jealous her daughter (who was down the road doorknocking with her) would be.

Glad we could make her day and share her first python encounter with her! I know she will talk about it for a long time.

My parcel delivery lady knocked on the door one day when I had Smij, my darwin out. He was fairly tiny at the time, not long after I got him. I asked her through the security screen if she liked snakes. She said not really, but I opened the door anyway. When she saw him her eyes lit up and she siad "Aww, look how little he is." She didn't touch him but she was obviously fascinated and not at all scared.

That is so cool, I had a similar experience when some people came over for my birthday a few weeks ago. Especially the kids that were terrified at first but ended up really comfortable and fascinated when it came to feeding time.

Slowly we will take over the world, HaHaHaHa

On the opposite side of the coin, for those of you who have facebook, this animal page with a snake warming (and phone number for local snake catcher) has me SO angry that people are still so stupid and aggressive about killing snakes, I have to share... It all starts with a link to warm people that snakes are out and about:

You're doing a valiant effort there Nicole - well done :)

It's hard to change but a few, let alone the masses. Unfortunately too many don't want the education either!

But what you're doing is a good start!

Especially in this area, I find a lot of people are resistant to change, all of the cow-cockies love to sprout about how they kill any snake that comes onto their property, Good on ya Schnecke (Nicole)!

OMG Nicole I had to stop reading. All I wanted to do was 'like' yours and the other woman's posts, be a little petty and point out all the spelling and grammar mistakes in that douche's comments (the one with the car in his profile pic) and lmao at all the ignorant comments while screaming at the complete and utter ignorance.
F me; I lived in NZ for most of my life, only moved over here 5 years ago and started keeping reptiles 3 years ago but even before then I wasn't THAT bloody ignorant about snakes! GAH!!

Sorry for being off-topic but did anyone else notice that old wives tale about the snake sizing the person up while in bed with them on that page in the comments? That's the only time i have seen that story other than on here lol.
