my partner has different snakes a spotted, centralian and coastal pythons and now another centralian, i want to get a snake of my own as his scare me because i have been bitten by his spotted (which i used to handle regularly) and numerous times by his coastal and since than i have been to scared to hold them because of their size and getting bitten again (not sure if they know im scared of them hence why i get bitten) but i reallly do love them, and want to get one of my own, however im not sure what to get, i want something small i have read up about childrens and Stimson and most things say that children s can be more snappy than Stimson's just wanted to know what everyones thoughts are and which bread of snake u feel are the most placid, i like centralian pythons, they have never bitten either of us but i dont want anything that big.

I would just go with a spotted, some are crazy (we have a psycho one here) and some are absolutely lovely. If you get one as a hatchling and handle them regularly you won't have any trouble, an hatchling bites aren't anything to worry about :)
Maybe you could get one that could be a pair for your partners snake?
Or have you considered lizards if you're a bit nervous about snakebites?

And sorry, I was meant to say the majority of spotteds are lovely*

I agree, spotted are not too big, not too small, and usually nice temperament :) (and cheap and available too)

MM is right, get a young'n

Yes, they know you are scared, then they get scared what you are going to do. Get or make a small hook, pick up your (or partners) snake about mid section and use the hook to guide its head away from you if it looks like it wants to tag you. If you are going to pick it up, pick it up..... dont baulk and take 3 attempts to grab it, to the snake, it prolly appears that another snake (your hand and arm) is attacking them.

Hope you find a nice snake for yourself ;)

ok what you have to understand is any snake can and will bite you , its not a case of if it will bite - its more like when it will bite.
i have a question : say if u buy a hatchy [ say a spotted] 9 months later it starts to bite u every time u go to get it out . what are u going to do - be scared and not want to handle it ? .what im saying if your scared of geting tagged , dont get any snake .

albino darwin hatchy, dont get as big as a bredli and more placid than a normal darwin on the most part. look awesome but dont know what getting tagged by that would be like. everything has its moments ( my beardie garth makes me bleed my own blood most days lol ).

I would agree that if you don't want to be bitten by a snake then don't get one. It's bound to bite you at some stage, even if it is accidental!

^ Agreed with above - any snake, no matter how placid can bite. You shouldn't be put off by that though, just be careful when choosing one. I would suggest getting a yearling or older as the seller should be able to tell you if it is "usually" placid or not. Some can be just a pain and will bite, others will be calmer. When getting a hatchy, you usually don't know how it will turn out. I bought a hatchy spotted, bloody thing was the devil! Bit me every chance he got. I had another spotted that was absolutely fine - no two snakes will be the same. I'd suggest getting a yearling rather than a hatchy.

I would still handle it, but i would get my partner to get it out first, im the one who cleans the tanks and does the feeding etc, i just use a hook, im thinking about doing a handeling course, i have seen them advertised, just to get my confidence back.

So most of u say spotted is the way to go, has anyone got a children or a Stimson? and what u think they are like?

I have a stimmie and a sw carpet, both have yet to bite me. The stimmie doesnt even mind be touched in the slightest. And aslong as i let the sw know im there it wont even go into an s position anymore.

i have had a stimi and currently have a SWCP, the stimi was great but did have a strike at me once i think i scared it by mistake so my bad, but it was too small and hardly scratched my knuckle. but they are a small snake and very easy to deal with.

my SWCP tho bigger has only ever huffed at me (once when due to shed and once during feeding) shes probably the calmest snake i have seen,

a hatchling centralian without a doubt :) I'm getting one this weekend ...

I've heard nothing but good about them, but whatever ever choice you make just make sure it's right for you :)

best of luck

Yeah i must say the Centralian snakes we have are just beautiful, very placid, never even gone to bite us but they can get rather big, and seen snakes can live for 15 to 20 years i don't want anything that big, i looked at some pics of the SW pythons and i must say they look beautiful but they would get rather big, and im only looking for a little ish snake, i think i may go with a Stimson python though, now i just have to find a breader in the mackay area, as all the pet shops dont seem to have them...

Omg picked up my little bredli yesterday and he's the biggest sweetheart ever. instantly fell in love with him. SOOOO PLACID!! comes up and puts his nose against mine and he's only about 20cm. Best choice i've ever made. He's so perfect and gorgeous. So happy i hope you get what your looking for as I did! :D

Womas are great, I can let any stranger handel mine, I let crawl all over my face and have zero fear of him biting me.

I have a yearling Wheat Belt Stimson and he is a sweety most of the time. As stated before, all snakes bite, it's just a matter of when and how bad. My guy is placid as 99% of the time, he climbs through my hair, over my face, etc. but he has still tagged me several times. If you're only getting one to stop yourself being scared, I suggest working with the one you have until you are comfortable then consider getting what you really want. I would suggest getting a yearling if you are going to get one, as you can already tell their temperament (mostly).

I don't think you could really go wrong with any of the Antaresia... Childrens, Stimson or Spotted. If they do bite when they get bigger it doesn't hurt as such, it is more the suprise at getting struck. The wound will have a spot or two of blood and a quick wipe with a tissue the blood is gone and the wound won't let out another drop... paper cuts hurt and bleed worse.

My other choice if you don't mind a slightly bigger snake (full grown) would be a Woma. Generally all I have seen and heard regarding them is that they are like a faithful old Labradore.

All snakes can bite, my spotted has bitten me twice and both times were my own silly fault. Otherwise Skittles is lovely and placid. What ever you get, regular handling will calm your snake and build your confidence. I would start by regaining your trust of the spoted you already have in the house, even if your partner gets him out first. Or wear some of those white cotton gloves as he won't be able to hurt you through them.

If u work in a bucher make sure u have a shower in bleach before you try and handle a snake
