I'm glad you can see it now.

You may have missed something, or your original reply to my post was unclear - either one. I stated not to rely on a thermostat to monitor your temps, and you stated that you could...we went from there and now here we are.

Your thermostat may be accurate now, but it could fail. A thermometer is a good idea. End.of.story.

P.S. I said reading OR experience ;)

Well I'm glad - and now you know the ins and outs of thermostats and thermometers too ;) Win.

II already knew them. Now as much as I'd enjoy continuing this condescending back and forth we've developed I'm all out of winky faces. George out

Is this temperature ok in the tub i have it around 27- 32 degrees, i am using a heat mat with a thermostat. The snake is in shedding mode it hasn't started to shed yet but it started to hide more and be come aggressive. I know this is ok because sometimes shedding can hurt them.

Btw it a spotted python 2 years old, I will be soon getting a proper enclosure for it.
I dont think that shedding is painful for the snake. It is more that the snake needs to be defensive as it cant see properly with opaque eyes.
if a thermometer is not available then watch that the snake is thermoregulating. It should move between hot and cold ends over time. If it is always at the hot end then the cage is too cold. If it is always at the cold end (escaping the heat) then the cage is too hot!
I would agree that generally you should not trust temperatures as shown on thermostats unless you have calibrated them by checkig against known temperatures.

i'm currently flay out trying to get control of a new cage i have just built, it is only small as its for a juvi coastal carpet, its 650Hx600Wx450D 2/3 down from the top i have a thermometer sitting on a branch and it registers 32-35, drop the thermometer a few inches and it will read 25-27 then place thermo on the floor of enclosure and it will read 20-22, i have a week to get this problem sorted before the snake goes into it, or is a temp varience like that with in tollerence for coastals??? i am yet to put in a couple air vents which i picked up today will that make the air circulate a bit more and spread the heat around a bit more

Having a thermal gradient like that is ideal, maybe just give the snake an option of several hides in different temperature positions.

thanks mate i've been searching for an conclusion for the past 2 days, its been doing my head in on how to fix it, i turn the thermostate up to boost the lower temps then the temps up top get far to high, think i will just set it at 32 up top and whatever it end up down the bottom, but things may change as the encloure settles in and the substrate and walls all warm up, couldnt do it without a thermometer ey'!!!
