Is anyone in Melbourne interested in attending a non-political rally they are holding at the steps of parliament house on this Sunday @ 12pm? I?m not sure if it?s in every state but it?s definitely on in Victoria!

I'd never post anything political on here, or anywhere for that matter, and this post is not politically orientated. Apparently it will be attended by both the Premier & opposition leader of Vic.

This rally, which I will definitely attend is aimed towards the poor judgements that arise from rape & assault cases etc in courtrooms around the country, particularly in Victoria from our Judges!

I've always been an advocate of the death penalty for certain crimes and for certain instances, preferably reserved for the likes of Martin Bryant, Ivan Milat & co! But this isn't about death penalties! It's about poor & inadequate sentencing, and the victims of crime having fewer rights than those who commit the crimes against them!

I get tired hearing about the lenient sentences that get handed out to some, who blatantly flaunt the system and prey on venerable people!

Had I had my time over again, I was looking at joining the police force with the view of coming down hard on some of these individuals! It?s not right that our justice system seems to accomplish a hell of a lot more in slapping the face of the victims, rather then locking up some of these idiots for a very long time! Our police must be at their wits end risking their lives chasing these morons, and gathering the evidence, only to have the courts release them with either little or no sentencing!

Anyway, I?ve had my gripe! What do you all think! I?m going rain, hail or shine! For what result..who knows?

So many innocent people get convicted that it's hard for me to get all excited about trying to stick heavier penalties on sex offenders.

The term 'rape' has become misused over the years and sentences handed out wrongly in many cases. If the system worked perfectly, I'd be all for the death penalty in many cases, but with the system we have, the penalties are often too harsh as well as being laughably mild. The system we have doesn't work, but just increasing penalty severity isn't the answer in my opinion.

this post for me is hard bit close to home but i think sexoffenders and Peodophiles should have there penis cut off (sorry to the men in here)
and made to eat it while the bleed to death.

the sex offenders should be let out and let the public deal with them in there our way. i'll be first in line with gun or knife in hand.

I agree...the death penality is stupid would you rather see someone who has done a really bad wrong be left to rot in jail for the rest of his/her life then have no suffereing at all.

I'm all for the death penalty, in fact, if I had my way there'd be capital punishment for things like stealing car stereos or vandalising stuff, but I see no reason to torture people, the only function of it is to satisfy sadism. Surely our species has risen above that by now.

That is an incredibly sexist point of view. Anyone who believes that only men commit sex crimes is living in a box.

There are a number of problems with the death penalty,
first it assumes that either the system is perfect OR it is acceptable that the state murders the occasional (?) innocent person (which is ok, as long as it isn?t me). Properly the worst part is that the death warrant, this is normally signed by the leader of the state i.e. A POLITICIAN , which means that a person could be murdered/spared depending on weather A POLITICIAN thinks they will get more/less votes depending on his decision. This segues into the amount of information that the voter gets re every court case. Since it comes from the media, we can assume that they only know an incomplete version of the facts (I refuse to form an opinion based on only the information provided by the media, after all, a poll decided that Lindy Chamberlain should hang).

As for appropriate sentences, well that is a gray area. Personally I think white-collar crime is under-punished, a person that rips off thousands of peoples life-savings normally gets less than someone who rips off someone?s wallet. I'm sure that we can argue about this until the cows come home - twice.

And as for the death penalty being quick and painless remember that Oscar Wilde once said, "Nothing focuses the mind like the sight of the gallows.?. And we combine that with the hope and despair of appeals and rejections, that has to be the most exquisite torture.

I cannot advocate the death penalty but I have thought about what would be my stance if someone close to me did something horrendous, would I stand by them. I would in almost any situation except rape(how many interpretations of no do you want), pedophilia and being a clown(big shoes, red nose etc). Then you are on your own. That latter I could possibly change my mind about the death penalty.

In some cases, rape is so over rated. When someone attacks a stranger etc, it's clear. But when people start screaming for tougher penalties for 'rape', sometimes it can be really bad. Rapes aren't all the same. I know a guy who is getting dragged through the courts at the moment because he supposedly raped a girl. She was all for it, no complaints, completely consentual. Then a couple of weeks later she changes her mind and screams rape, her parents are going nuts about it, she's underage, so despite having been okay with it on the night (and lying about her age to the guy when he asked) and the fact that she was in a night club which only lets over 18's in (yes, she went in illegally) he is now up on rape charges and it looks like he's in deep $#!t. Someone like that in my opinion doesn't deserve any penalty and the girl deserves something severe, as do her parents for encouraging the legal action. I don't really like the guy, but having seen this happening over the last few months makes me really worry when people start talking about making rape penalties worse.

Anyone who takes someone elses child or thier own and tortures and molests them dont deserve to live
Why let them go to prison get out and do it again nip it in the bud

There was a show on the ABC the other night about a lady who was raped in her bed at night. She made an identikit of the guy that she believed raped her. The police found a person matching the victims ID of the attacker. The police then conducted several line ups and she identified the smae guy every time. The case went to trial and he lost, he spent several yrs in gaol before he found out about another guy openly bragging that he had been the one to rape her. The supposed man that raped her then went back to court in an appeal for his innocence. After being found guilty again returned to gaol for another 8 yrs. The whole time maintaining his innocence. 8 yrs after being sent back to gaol he was given a third chance by way of DNA testing. A sperm sample they had collected from the rape victim yrs before was compared with his.
He was not the person who raped her, it was in fact the guy that had bragged about it. A sad story but a true one.

I am a big believer that the punishment should fit the crime, but I also believe that they must be 100% correct too. I know I wouldn't like to go to gaol because I looked similar to the actual attacker.
Cases like Martin Bryant are an open/shut case and the death penalty IMO should have been carried out.

Just my opinion anyway......
